Similar hull shape to a Lightning, but Lightnings have enclosed forepeaks and a slightly harder chine.

Thank you for the reply. I know the sail is quite large for the boat itself. The person we got it from was an older gentleman who used to race. He said this boat was to fast to for him to enjoy relaxing boat ride.
Is it possible it could be a kit boat? I get the feel that it might older like pre-1975 or definitely less the 1980's. But again I could be wrong, lol.

That is possible. It is the type of hull shape that could lend itself to being kit built. Don’t suppose there’s a hull identification number inscribed in the top right of the transom?

It does look pretty close.

@mulaasigirl do you have the dimensions? The Thistle is 17’ long and 6’ wide. Sail rite also gives the dimensions of all the sails at Thistle Sail Data to cross check.
The Thistle is not hard chined so it isn't a Thistle, but it looks similar. Thistles were and are very expensive, if in good shape, and have a very large racing fleet in the US. It would be my choice of boat if I wanted to race. Classic beauty, style and fast .

it would be right on top not hidden anywhere typically? I just don't see one.

The gentleman who gave it to us did say he had went through and restored quite a bit of the boat.

The only similarity with a Thistle would be the vertical stem. The only similarity to a Lightning would be the hard chines. So it has really nothing to do with either of them. It is too short. It is too big to be a Penguin. Is there an insignia on the sail that might indicate a class name? Is the bottom flat or does it have a slight V to it? A flat bottom would be more likely home-built, since that is easier to build.
