ICOM Remote Mic Cord

My remote mic cord is disintegrating. I remove it everytime we come in and store it in the chart table. My mic is about 5 years old. Can someone give me some suggestions as to why this has happened? The mic works fine but looks terrible with the wires exposed. The mic in the cabin on the VHF looks brand new. I thank you for your replies.

Sun and salt! I replaced mine a few years ago. Replacement cord is available from ICOM.

I contacted Icom direct because my mic cord was like that too. They sent me the part number for a new cord and suggested a local dealer to order the part.

It took about 2 weeks for the part to come in. When I went to the dealer to pick up the new cord he offered to install it in the mic for free. He did it in about 8 minutes and we now good to go for another 8 years.

I think the sun ate it because the mic was always left outside.

I don't remember the cost but it was quite reasonable.
