Ice chest

Has anyone replaced the existing cooler/ice chest on a 1976 or similar Hunter 30. I am rehabbing the inside and the old one looks quite inefficient, has sharp corners and the insulation is quite decrepid. I am thinking along the lines of a drop in cooler, that holds the cold better. I don't think I will go so far as to entertain refrigeration of any sorts. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I would certainly recommend a refrigeration unit, but in any case, whatever you decide, the most important item is insulation, insulation, insulation. If you can get 4 to 6 inches of insulation all around and on top you will make much better use of the ice chest.

I'm not sure what you have, but

my cooler ('77 H30) is molded into the counter unit, with a flat lid that doubles as counter top. Since it's right beside the engine compartment, a lot of heat is generated, and durable efficient insulation is needed. Not sure whether the insulation I have is original, but I'm sure its old. One of the project I've put off so far is scratching out the old blown in rigid insulation that is underneath the molded cooler, exposed to the engine, and replacing it with some kind of new tech durable insulation panels that would be more efficient. I don't have any real information though, about just how to go about it. Helpful, huh?
