Ice chest cavity

Am thinking about lining the ice chest cavity with insulation. Wondering if anyone else has tried this, and if so, did it help? I plan on glueing in the two long sides and the closed end, plus the lid, and having a removable piece on the open end. Also thinking about putting an elbow on the drain in the cooler down to the galley sink drain. That way I don't have to take it out when it fills up with water. Seems to be enough room for one inch sheets of insulation all around, just curious if it will help. Fair winds, John

Why not...

...just buy one of the 5 day coolers? Seems like a simpler solution. I think that this would be less toruble... although you will probably lose a little more cooler space than you would with 1 inch all around....

Freeze recycled water bottles.

This will solve the water problem and you can drink them when they melt. However, on a longer trip this won't help as much. Careful about tapping into the sink drain. When beating to windward, water can be rammed up into the sink or with your modification the ice box unless you use a valve. alan

Already have......

Already have a "5" day cooler, and have tried the frozen water bottles. I'm currently trying to set the boat up for living on for a year or so, while I look for a bigger boat after I retire. So I'm trying to think of ways to stay on the hook, and out of marinas. Fair winds, John

Try a soft cooler

We use a soft cooler inside of hard cooler. It holds ice 4-5 days. We use another soft cooler as a day cooler. The key is to open the cooler only once a day to move supplies for that day to day cooler.

hand bilge pump

I agree with the soft cooler or 5-day cooler idea over lining the opening. I think you'll spin your wheels to get very little extra life out of your ice. As for getting the water out, I just use a hand bilge pump and pump it into the sink. You should probably have a hand pump on board anyway as a safety measure, and it only takes a few strokes to empty the cooler. Actually, another thing I've done is to pump the water out of the cooler into the water bladder under the sink for dish-washing, etc. Kills 2 birds with one stone.

DRAIN

I will address the drain issue. Some time ago I made a drain tube from my ice chest to the sink drain. I put a valve in it but never use it as Ihave never had a problem with back flushing. The idea of having drain into a water supply is a good idea for saving water. corky
