I know this is a stupid question but...

I just purchased an O'Day 25 and I can't figure out how to get the ice box to be cold. Does anyone have any words of wisdom that may help? It looks like it is connected to a small copper line (propane?) but I'm not sure. Please help.

I don't have anything like a refrigerated ice box on mine. Mine just takes some ice to cool it and a drain underneath for the water to go out.

Danny: the Oday 25 did not come with a refrigerator. The ice box is just that: an insulated (and poorly at that) box with a drain at the bottom that needs ice to make it and keep it cool. The original ice box was put directly under the companionway, just behind the step into the cabin. If you have a refrigerated unit elsewhere on the boat, it was installed by someone other that the good people at Oday. Maybe if you sent pictures, someone here could help figure out how to turn it on.

Thank you. That make so much more sense. Thank you for answering my very dumb question.

There are no dumb questions; only dumb answers. Please never be afraid to ask anything here. So many of these old boats have been modified over the years that I am almost never surprised anymore by what people have done. I have seen or heard of Oday 25's with inboard engines, custom cabinets, marine heads, etc. Just because Oday didn't put in refrigeration doesn't mean that someone else didn't do so and that your question isn't perfectly legit.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Oday owners!

We use our "ice box" only to store dry goods. The cockpit cooler stays full of iced down beverages! For extended weekends we use a thick walled 5 day cooler and keep it cold with gallon milk jugs full of frozen water.

Sounds familiar. I use my "ice box" to hold my tool kit and spare lines. Cold drinks, food, etc. are kept in coolers lodged in the spaces under the cockpit seats. I use the cockpit seat "cooler" for my winch handle, bungee cords, cup holders and other misc stuff.

Upon looking again, I'm thinking there may have been some modification done. There is a cooling coil inside the "ice box" that seems to be attached to some sort of electrical...thing. I'm attaching a couple pics so people can see. It plugs in to an electrical outlet and when I do so, I hear a very small click, but that's it. Does anyone know about this? Please see attached pics.

Yeah, someone tried to convert the original icebox by installing a freezer strip. They are expensive, and if the freon or ammonia or whateverthehell was in the thing for refrigerant leaked out, which they do, it's toast. It's a cool idea, pardon the pun, and I'd do it myself if it wasn't so expensive. Actually, looking at the second pic, someone went the cheap route and gutted a cube refridge and took out the little freezer unit at the top. Whoever did it was a gadget guy and had to be careful not to nick the line anywhere when removing. Underneath looks like an inverter.
