Has anybody drained their ice box into the gally sink thru hull. Should I use a check vavle so the water doesn't back up?

Galley sink check valve...

Unless your 28.5 is plumbed differently, the galley sink should have a seacock that is controlled by the thru hull located in the cabinet beneath the stove. The ice box drains into the forward compartment of the bilge, just aft of the compression post. I don't see how you could connect the ice box drain to the galley sink.

As a matter of habit, our seacock for the sink is always closed unless the sink is in use, then it's opened, to be closed when the galley clean up is completed.

To avoid the moisture and the bilge pump running from melted water from the ice-box, I've started bringing 2 or 3 frozen 1/2 gallon jugs of ice to cool the ice box. If ice is needed, it gets stocked into the auxiliary cooler that's strapped to the seat above the toilet. Less water inside = less moisture = a happy interior :). Once the ice has melted, I have 1.5 gallons of water to use elsewhere, as needed.

Yes, by all means if you do it, use a check valve unless you want your ice cooler full of sea water. The water level on the sink hose raises qite a bit when the boat is under heel or settling in between the waves. The ice cooler is designed to drain into the bilge where the water is expelled by the bilge pump. I would not try to 2nd guess the boat designer.

My 28.5 sink hose has barely any drain to it- cause the hose loop/trap comes up very high under the counter before heading for the thru-hull- which by the way, didn't come with a seacock either there or under the lav sink.

Cork it

You are losing a lot of cold air right down the drain! The heavy cold air inside the ice box will drain right out throoh the drain hose, drawing in warm air through the ice box lid. Your ice and food (and beer) will stay colder if you plug the drain with a cork and sponge out the water at the end of the weekend. Placing a small towel or thermal blanket on top of the ice and food also helps to keep it cool longer.
