I am lloking at installing a refrigeration unit in my new 1984 C-30. There are several different models on the market, depending upon your climate (air or sea water cooled), AC/DC or just DC power, and cold plate configuration (round, like those found in a "dorm" style refrigerator, or flat/shaped that lay against the wall of the ice box. The biggest issue is matching up the compressor and cold plate size to the cubic feet of the icebox. Does anyone know the approximate square footage of the ice box in a 1984 C-30? I would measure it but I do not have access to the boat at this time. Defender has a great sale going on right now for the air cooled versions, and would like to order mine while the price is right.

What About Your Insulation?

Don't forget the most important piece of the calculation - insulation. Read about the recommendations and you'll see why. By the time you insulate the box enough to keep the unit from running all the time and shortening it's expensive lifespan you'll have a smaller box. If you're lucky enough to have room outside on ALL sides and corners then it won't be an issue. But don't forget the need for proper insulation. Read up at Adler Barbour's site. Good luck.
