just installed an ice box kit from norcold and wondering if others have had any experience with running it on battery and solar . Am looking at adding solar panels for short costal cruises this summer. Specs say unit draws 3.1 amps under full load.

That's a big solar panel and a big battery,,,

Also you'll want a larger alternator. Add additional insulation to the ice box. Good luck.

I Have an Older Norcold...

...fridge that draws about 5 amps. FYI. It was installed in '88 and I have 3 house batteries that get charged morning and night by the engine. The total amps that I have in my house bank is around 300 hours and will run the fridge for 24+ hours. I have a 100+ amp alternator to recharge the batteries.

I wouldn't do solar

To get adequate solar power to keep your batteries charged it will be very costly approx. $500 for about 120 watts. I would suggest getting a wind generator for a little bit more. On ebay you can buy a MarineX wind generator for $600-$1000 and get an output of 400 watt. it will keep refer running and also keep your batteries charged too! Just as a thought Solar Panels don't work at night!
