just installed an ice box kit from norcold and wondering if others have had any experience with running it on battery and solar .Am looking at adding solar panels for short costal cruises this summer.Specs say unit draws 3.1 amps under full load.
...fridge that draws about 5 amps. FYI. It was installed in '88 and I have 3 house batteries that get charged morning and night by the engine. The total amps that I have in my house bank is around 300 hours and will run the fridge for 24+ hours. I have a 100+ amp alternator to recharge the batteries.
To get adequate solar power to keep your batteries charged it will be very costly approx. $500 for about 120 watts. I would suggest getting a wind generator for a little bit more. On ebay you can buy a MarineX wind generator for $600-$1000 and get an output of 400 watt. it will keep refer running and also keep your batteries charged too! Just as a thought Solar Panels don't work at night!
