Hunter 290 Havre de Grace
Hello All,
I own a 2000 Hunter 290 and have discoved that the hose on the ice box drain is not connected and as a result, water is leaking out from the base of the sink cabinet. I am just able to touch the end of the drain fitting on the ice box with my finger tip. There is no way I can slide a hose onto it due to its location. Has anyone experienced this issue and resolved it? Any suggestions on how to gain access to this fitting? Thanks very much.

If the ice box is supposed to drain into the bilge...

If the ice box is supposed to drain into the bilge, a PO prob'ly disconnected it...'cuz ice box water is full of bacteria that turns a bilge into a stinking "primordial soup." So once you've figured out how to get access to the drain, you need to install a sump into which both the ice box and the shower (if the ice box drains into the bilge now, the shower--also a major odor source--does too) will drain. Your boat will smell SO much better if you do!

Our PO plugged up our frig drain, which suits me just fine. Don't want all that yucky stuff in the bilge. If there is a little water in the frig, I just sponge it up.

Hi All,

I just bought a Y2K H290, and spent the weekend moving it from Orange Beach AL to Fort Walton Beach, FL. I also noticed some water collecting in the galley, and my quickie diagnosis led me to either the sink drain or the icebox drain. Thinking back on it, the water was pretty cold, so I'm guessing I have the same problem as the original poster (although I haven't looked for the ice box drain line yet).

A quick perusal of the owner's manual told me that the ice box and shower were designed at the factory to drain into the bilge... and this is one of the first things I intend to change. The problem I'm running into is that the bilge is rather shallow on these boats, and I haven't found a good place for a sump.

Has anyone else made this modification to a 290, and if so, can you tell us how you did it?

In the mean time, I think I'm going to plug the drain and mop out the puddles. At least until I can figure out why the AB Reefer isn't working.

Ice box collects a lot more water than a fridge...

A bit too much to just mop out with a sponge. But a dinghy bailer and bucket along with a sponge solves that problem...and could be a much better solution than a sump.

...Leaving you only the shower water to figure out how to keep out of the bilge...

Strange, for I only need to mop the frig bottom a little (2 tbps) every 3-4 days while cruising. Our shower sump, which the a/c also drains into, is in the bilge but up high, so it pumps overboard before actually going into the bilge bottom. I suppose we could run a drain hose from the frig to the shower sump, but there isn't enough to bother doing the work.

It just occured to me he is talking about ice box and I'm talking about 12v frig. Would make a big difference on how much water drains.
