I would like to modernize my 1980 H 30. I am a shop teacher who has renovated several old houses. I would like to find someone has done this before or had it done. any hints? Thanks CJScholz@pcbank.net

What do you mean by "modernize?"

Hopefully, not "replace or cover the rich glow of the interior wood with plastic!" Updated carpet, window treatments, wall coverings, and upholstery fabrics can do wonders without major renovation. My most recent boat wasn't a sailboat, but it was built in '79 when "harvest gold," rust, burnt orange and a color that only be described as "dog poop brown" were all the rage. I made no structural changes...New white table and countertops, and new white wallcovering where there already was wall covering, plus all new soft goods turned a "floating bag lady" into a very contempory classic. Her website is at: http://www.solitairef32.homestead.com/ if you want to see what I mean.

have to agree with Peggy

Chris: I would have to agree with Peggy. Be careful with what you do to MODERIZE your boats interior. Part of what owner like about the 'Cheribs' is that they DON'T look like a tupperware boat. Many of the older Hunters are in need of things like new counter tops and upolstery and cleaning of the wood. I would think that these types of things would be right for the boat and would not destroy value if you ever decide to sell.

Chris, check the interior of this. . .

1980 H37C(web address below). Is this what you want or what you do not want? What would you change?

Agree with Peggy

We had a 1981 H37 Cutter. The previous owner built in a TV w/VCR, CD, etc. Stained glass window bar/cabinet. He put teak over the old "carpeted" walls, built in more cabinets, shelving, etc. We hung a trawler lamp over the dining table. We had new curtains made, a cutting board to go over the stove burners, new uphostery, throw rugs. If we had kept the boat, we would have definitely replaced the scratched old ugly plastic hatches! Found someway to patch all the leaks. Replaced the old teak and holly floor. Good luck! G

A few ideas...

My 1986 Hunter31 had the black lucite cabinet cover sides port and starboard. I replaced them with "seat caning" framed in teak. This allows ventilation as well as giving the down below a more contemporary look. The black acrylic looked too 1980's modern. I stained the caning a dark teak to match the rest of the woodwork. As far as window treatments I would go with mini Blinds. Also changing your jargon will help give your boat a contempory feel ie. instead of hatches call them skylights!

Keep your wood projects home.

Your boat has a internal pan, that means you are limited to that layout, there are many "add on's" you can incorporate, but you can't remove the molded to the hull, internal pan, add partitions to the nav, new cushons, a better stove, 12v lights, BUT don't mess with the pan, better to sell the boat, and buy a gutted out older boat, and knock yourself out.
