Ok be honest, how many other nothern sailors anre still on the hard? I have been busy with installing a total new toliet, hoses and holding tank, PSS, holding tank indicator and bilge pump. Plus the normal wash, wax and bottom paint. Oh yeah and clean the stainless and clean the interior, air out everything and oil the teak. At this point I can't wait to finish and get in the water. Should be sometime this week. Anyone else tired of spring maintenance? But at least I wasn't the less than brilliant individual who put the gas hose in his rod holder and pumped 50 gallons of gas into Wickford Cove today. Thank God no fire! Russell

2 weeks ago tomorrow

is when I went in. Thought the spring maintenance would never end. Final check of everything yesterday, and sailed today. Everything worked great, but it's still cold!

I want my boat wet!

So the dockmaster/yard king told me I was holding up a J35 'Zorro' so I busted my hump INCLUDING installing the new CDI furler-many lessons learned, share another time-quick varnish job on the tiller I had just gotten back from the tiller-sock-making lady-touched up the bottom paint, prepped the saildrive lower unit and administered to the engine and told him Thursday I was ready to go in on Friday, only to be told he wasn't ready. Too mnay boats, too many moves, and I'm heading to GA for four days. Made up for the disappoointment by picking up my new furling jenny and loose-footed main from Dave at Ace Sailmakers in New London, and they look superb. More later on launch and sail preformance. Frustratin', that's what it is! Bill Coxe, O28 Kukulcan, New London, CT

stuck in back of the yard

the boat i bought in feb. is stuck in the back. they wont put it on the truck until 6/1!!!! they wont get to mine until they launch all their "new" boats, and so on. so the lesson is when you buy a used boat. ask when you can get it!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Russell,

I've been in since early April, but still I envy you Naragansett Bay guys (used to live in East Greenwich). When we're drifting around the lake in mid summer, you'll be enjoying plenty of wind. What's that about greener grass...?

Nevermind Marriage, it's the kid!

With an 8-month old son I have had little time for the basic maintenance of poor old Dulcinea (1966 O'day Mariner). She's still on the cradle out in front of the house with her green tarp still snug and with her bottom sanded but not yet painted. My son should be waking up from the afternoon nap in an hour and I am setting up the old pack-n-play in the yard so he can watch Daddy wipe down the boat and then get a coat of paint on her before Mommy gets home and wants to know "what's for dinner?". And I thought that staying home with the baby for a few months would allow me time to get some projects done. HA! Maybe I will get the boat out by Independence Day. I know that little George will enjoy it once he gets out. I wonder how long before he can handle a random orbit sander? Scott

Hey Rob

Dulcinea has a fixed keel, which is nicely rusted and pitted. Last year I got real ambitious with some horrible epoxy goo and tried to get a fair surface. This year I am slapping on the paint and to hell with appearances. She is a good boat, with most of the original fittings. I have the "Mariner" version with an inoperative sink and v-berth. You'd have to be 3' tall to be comfortable in the cabin, but it is nice to get out of the weather for a rest. I have teak floorboards in the cockpit, which a former owner painted grey. I have tried to strip the paint but it is a nasty job that I simply do not have time for this year. I enjoy sailing her. There is a marine education center in Oyster Bay that rents Rhodes 19s. I want to try one out to see if it is any different than the Mariner. Cheers!

Scott,

The rhodes 19 that I have centerboard ..was a mess when I bought it 2 years ago...She was neglegted for years...I was in between jobs when I picked her up and had about 2 months before I started my next one..so it was perfect..The hull had 4 coats of brush marked slop paint..I stripped the hull and bottom to the gelcoat....I picked up some jacks and got her way up so I could drop the centerboard ( a 400# chuck of rusted metal)...I grinded it down fairly well then filled her with fiberglass bondo..3 coats..she was beautiful...I put 3 coats of shark white copper petite bottom paint on her...As for the hull I used awlgrip..3 coats of flag blue almost black....the floor boards were so bad I really didnt know what type of wood they were.. I sanded then and put 10 coats of varnish..beautifull mohogany.....sails and rigging were in great shape...we cranked sailing last year...this January we bought our big boat 46' Morgan..so I dont think little "Leveosa" will be hitting the wet much this year.....oh i forgot..completly rebuilt the trailer too...by the time 8 weeks were up I wanted to go back to work just so I could sit down!!! have fun sailing mine is really fast and strong!!
