I need the headstay length for my H34. I thought it was indicated by one of the symbols. I guess I'm wrong according to a local sailmaker. Can someone tell me what the symbols I, P, E, and J refer to? What about the headstay length on the 34? Thanks.

IPEJ is

Joe Don't know about the headstay length for the 34 but I - the distance from the deck to the masthead P - the length of the mains luff E - with the outhaul tight, the distance from the back edge of the mast at the boom to aft edge of the sail(clew) on the boom J - the distance from the jib attachment (tack) on the deck to the mast. Assuming it's a right triangle then...

"A" squared plus "B" squared = "C" squared. 46' squared is 2116 squared feet. 13.75' squared is 189.06 squared feet. The sum is 2305.06 squared feet. The square root of that is 48.01'. However, the mast is supposed to be raked rearward, so the length of the headstay will probably be a bit more than 48.01'. Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Joe!

Look at the web page at Bacon & Assoc which gives a diagram with all the letters as well as values for the H34 along with most other boats. It also has a lot of other info on sails. Joe - how about emailing me at keswift2@aol.com so we can get together this spring. Would love to see what you are doing. Eric

boat karma

Envision this: the aforementioned "unwitting soul" is just about to pay Edwin's full asking price, but before he makes the purchase he gets on Google and types in "Hunter 34" to see what people think about the boat. Google sends him to this website where he reads Edwin's New Year (sic) resolution posted over and over and over with the same typos.

sailmaker

Joe, any sailmaker worth his yarn will hike his fanny down to your boat and measure it himself. If he's not willing to do that, find a better sailmaker.

IPEJ

Joe; From the H34 manual; I (foretriangle ht.)-- 46.0 ft -- 14.02m P (mainsail luff) --- 41.0 ft -- 12.49m E (mainsail foot) --- 11ft 9in - 3.58m J (fortriangle base)- 13ft 9in - 4.91m Mast height -- 46ft 3 in --14.09m This may help in determining the actual headstay length. Mac

Doesn't compute

Are the specs incorrect for the Hunter 23 in the "boat information?" Doesn't make sense (to me) considering the IPEJ explanation earlier in this thread. Specs for h23 say I is 26', P is 25'8in. I know my boom is more than four inches off the deck. Mac

fraction rig

The reason it doesn't compute, Mac, is that you're dealing with a fraction rig. Don't forget that the head of the main is higher than the head of the jib.
