I have found a Oday 25 that has been in storage for about 6 years. I can get it cheap, maybe real cheap. I have always had water skiing boats so I'm not a green horn( or maybe i am). The boat looks pretty solid, it has alot of work to restore it. The price might be under $1000, but the sails and to make it perfect will take time. I give myself 2 years to complete the project and on the water in 2006. I would like any opinion I can get with hints( what to look for etc.) Thanks for your time. Art

I'm in the same boat

Good luck with your restoration. I too am trying to breath new wind into a neglected boat..'84 Oday 26. Look for water damage at the bulkheads where the chainplates mount. Also take the time to remove, clean and re-bed all the deck mounted hardware. The goal is to stop all leaks into the cabin. An archive search on "bulkheads", "Chainplates", "Rebedding" will yield tons of info and helpful ideas. Also be on the lookout for core damage, wet/rotted plywood between the fiberglass "sandwich" layers on the top deck. I can't help much in regards to hull problems...I'm still trying to get my cabin dry. We learn as we go. Don't be afraid to jump into a project, figure out the problem and arrive at a solution...Ah, the joy of boat ownership! Good luck and good sailing.

$1000 is likely a deal

At $1,000, that's likely to be a deal. If the boat is floatable, and reasonably repairable. If it's not, let me know, I might be interested in parts.

Count me in!!!!

$1,000 dollars, some blood, sweat and tears and you are on the water? That is aout the average price of a auto repair in todays market. Most boat repairs take time, but are doable. I should know, I hae two left thumbs!!!! Think of it as the learning tool for when you buy your classic Hinkley.

My Stored O'Day

My O'Day 25 had also been stored for 6 years, outside. As a matter of fact, the trailer it was on rusted out from under it after 5 years. I was amazed at how little it took to "restore" it. The engine started after about 6 tries (new gas tank though). I had to replace all of the running rigging. Within 2 years of getting it, I also had to replace the standing rigging. The centerboard was stuck in the "up" position. Marine growth was inside the trunk. Clearing that out didn't require a real repair though. The cloth on the insides of the hull is all falling down, so I'll need to replace that. I just now (after 2 1/2 years) had to replace the motor bracket and beef up the inside of the transom (I'm finishing that one this weekend). I think it was really shot, just took a couple of years for it to get bad enough to have to be replaced. I guess what I'm saying is that these boats were pretty well built, and unless you have major water intrusion, most of the repairs can be of the "do it yourself" variety, and likely done over a period of time WHILE you're using the boat. I would recommend, if at all possible, that you make the boat sailable ASAP, and use it while you're doing the refurb. This lets you see what actually NEEDS repair, as opposed to what would make it "look better".

Stored Oday

Sounds like a fun project, of course I've always liked the Oday 25. I agree with Mark about rebedding all the hardware. One of the problems that you will find is the balsa core often rots around deck hardware that has allowed water to leak in. The best fix is to clean out the rotted core and seal it with thickend epoxy. The less access for water to reach the core the better. Check out the bulkheads and make sure they are solid, water can leak through the chainplates and sometimes leads to rotting. The rudder needs to be checked for cracks or damage as does the centerboard. The standing rigging needs to be checked for damage and rust, also the turnbuckles should move freely. The running rigging should be in good condition. I would also rework the winches and grease them. I almost forgot, make sure you check the bedding on the bow eye. That should take care of most problems you'll find. Like I said earlier, I like the 25 and think you will really enjoy it when it is done. Good Luck and God Bless
