check with your local sailmaker

What sort of sail do you want - cruising, racing or? My sailmaker, John Bartlett of Bartlett sails in the Austin, Tx. area, made my new one for my Hunter 37 several years ago. Full batten, lot of roach and bullet proof for cruising with extra reinforcement. Price was very good. Everyone thinks of the few big lofts, but your local guy may be able to make a much better custom sail than them, and the price may be better. Both were true in my case. http://www.bartlettsails.com/ I just this week commissioned him to make a new main for my trailer sailor, a Starwind 223. Of course it'll be full batten, lots of roach, and bullet proof. He has a form you fill out with drawings showing where to measure and it goes from there. Check with your local sailmaker or call John. Gene Gruender Rainbow Chaser

New at a local loft

If you can afford it, a new sail will be the biggest improvement you can make to your boat. Evaluate the lofts in your area, and pick the one with the sailmaker you feel will best take care of you. The visit to your boat to assess your current inventory, really listening to how you intend to use the boat, understanding of local conditions, advice on sail trim, and long term support are among the advantages I enjoy from my relationship with Greg Koski at Doyle in Cleveland. If you can get that from a local sailmaker, it is worth far more than price differences you can find, IMHO. By the way, on my first round, buying a new main, all of the lofts I talked to were willing to meet the best price I found, locally, or on the web. The new main reduced heel by 5 degrees, and gave us a good knot more drive in 15 knot winds on our 77 h27. Good luck! David Lady Lillie
