Our 91' Hunter 28 does not maintain cruising rpm. Due to vibration you have to hold the throttle in position or tie it off to maintain RPM.

Is there a friction adjust in the pedestal or in/near the engine compartment? If not how do I fix this problem?

Thanks in advance for the info.

The friction ridges wear out after a few years. Some place friction restrictors on the cables and others use a wedge in between the lever and the binnacle. Make a small wedge out of cardboard and duct tape an use it until you find a more permanent solution. You can even attach a string to keep it handy.

My friend's H280 has same problem so I got him to put a small hose clamp (jubilee clip) to the throttle cable sleeve/shield. And it works. Careful to tighten the clamp till just about good enough friction for throttle to stay in place. Don't over tighten and collapse the sleeve/shield.

You can also use a tennis ball- just cut a small hole in the top and bottom and slide it tight onto the throttle lever

Yes, you can adjust the tension on the cable. Take you compass off and you should see the throttle cable connected to the pedesatal with little clamps. You shoudl be able to tighten it there. I think there is also an adjustment on the cable near the engine.

If you do use the Morse J style clamp, put it as near the cable head as posssible- that is as near the control as possible rather than near the engine. It is easier to get at to adjust if near the engine but works much better nearer the control- not as much cable flex I guess. I moved mine a couple of years ago and it works much better

I keep a small rag on the binacle to wipe off instruments etc, and just slip it between lever and case when cruising under motor to hold still. Tidy and easy to take on/pull off

Jammed a moist paper towel between the binacle and throtle for a few years and it worked great. Installed a new throtle cable, and "wa-la" works "greater."

As in an earlier post, remove the compass. As you stand facing the bow, look down on the shaft that exits to starboard and you whould see a bolt. It provides friction when tightened to the shaft. Tighten the bolt until you have sufficient pressure to hold it.

A bungie cord works, I used on throttle on my my Hunter 29.5. I set at 2700 rpm. Worked well.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas. I removed the compass from the binnacle and tightened the friction bolt. Problem solved.
