As liveaboards, we really wanted some rugs for our boat/home. After looking into what was commercially available, I realized we could put our skills as interior and graphic designers to use! We designed, and hand tufted our rugs using a tufting gun (it's a crazy cross between a drill and a sewing machine) and New Zealand wool yarn. The whole process was much fun and I can't wait to make more.

Hello VisionPNW Those are eye-catching in a good way! Were you able to put a nonskid backing on your beautiful rugs to make them boat-people friendly?

Yes, they are backed with a lightweight felt, and then we have them on rug pads which are nonskid.

Those look great! I tried looking up a tufting gun but only found examples of buttons pushed into cushions. What was it used for on this project?

I A B S O L U T E L Y love it. One of the coolest things I've seen in a long time.

Great shapes and graphic designs too. You are very talented.

Thanks for posting this. It's nice to get away from the typical boat repair and best anchor posts, once in a while.

Thank you so much! It was a nice break from my list... Next up bilge cleaning, portlight replacement, enclosure repairs, shower sump rewire, a new asym... You know the story!

I'm very impressed. I once knew a Doctor in L.A. with a 65' Stephens motor yacht. He spent crazy money on that boat including custom-made wool rugs, wall to wall, in similar geometric patterns from Fields Rugs in Bev. Hills. Much like yourself, he designed the pattern and colors himself. They cost a small fortune, though. Good for you on a big-time DIY!!
