After a month of waiting I got the call. The boat was a former rental boat that along with three others was put up in a sealed-bid auction. All were in usable condition but IMO this one was the best. The scuffs in the hull were only superficial.
The trailer is solid with no rust and a great set of wheels and tires. The winch is good and it just needs a kickstand wheel.
I snagged the best parts from the selection available between the four boats. There were little things broken but the hull was solid as a rock and I was not satisfied with the use of plastic here anyway. Look for stainless or foam-wrapped steel tubing to replace these in the future. As you can see, the boat was out in the elements for a while.
The rudder is interesting, it kicks up. The plates are IMO too thin, but I think the rudder had been allowed to loosen up and was never corrected. The play combined with users who likely didn't give a rat's hairy booty about the boat have destroyed it. This was the BEST one. I already have ideas to beef it up, no worries.
The centerboard is the swing up type and has some scrapage on the leading edge. The rudder did too. The mechanism works fine but I intend to rip it all out, clean and lube it and replace the control lines.
I think I managed to score the only cover. It was filthy but still very serviceable. A good scrubbing and an hour out in the hot sun and she's good to go.
The mast and boom are Dwyer and the blocks Harken. The years have not done much to them. They cleaned up with soap and water and a scotchbright pad. The cast aluminum ends had the accursed white rust. I gave them heavier attention. I pulled all the cordage off and tightened up the cleats, some were coming loose.
After a few hours the boat is already looking 100% better. I carefully scrubbed off the hull scuffs and gave it a quick wax.
I'm not feeling the stickers and stuff. I will likely get them off and polish the hull nice. Not sure if I will put a different graphics scheme on it or just leave it white, but this is definitely NOT my style.
I have another tab open as I type this, buying some parts! I need all new cordage, scupper plugs, and a few lil bits. I was worried I would need new sails, but not only did I get a serviceable set, but a full extra set new in the bag!
The boat isn't the only project. My intended tow vehicle needs a hitch fabricated. I had to call in a favor and borrow a buddy's truck to bring it home.
