Having been hit by lightning, I have read a lot on the suject. The main reason to ground the mast to the keel is to maintain both the mast and the surrounding water at the same "potential" so the mast doesn't look like a target. Also - don't head for land as suggested by one of the responses. Stay in deeper water so that you boat provides less of a "ground" target than boats in shallow water.
