Ok I did it! I was removong the stuffing box on my 33hunter 1979.to repack it and i decided what the hell lets remove the cutlass bearing. You see I decided to remove the shaft from the trasmission to pop of the stuffing nut as to make removal of 21 year old stuffing easier. No the previous owner never changed the packing. I got these off with out a hitch. i decided to drop the strut to remove the shaft completely and have the yard change the cutlass bearing. I brought the prop shaft and strut to the marina and they cleaned and sanded the shaft and replaced the cutlass. They asked if i had another yard do the removal and i said no i did it myself. I also said i would replace it myself. I was told that i had just saved $1000 by doing it myself. the bill from them was $180. I reinstalled everything with the help of my wife and now just have to wait 6 more weeks to get off the hard

John: I had this done when we painted the bottom two years ago. We had the boat hauled, bottom power washed, painted, new zincs, repitched our prop, replaced the cutlass bearing and repacked stuffing box for $720. (this included the bearing, paint, tape, packing, tax and labor) I bet it is hard to wait the next six weeks, huh?

Cutlass bearing replacement ?

I'm glad you saved the $1000, but did you remove the strut to change the cutlass bearing ? When I changed mine a couple of years ago I did it with the shaft and strut in place. Just had to make a simple tool to push out the old bearing.

Shaft in place?

Very interesting. I had thought that the shft would have to be removed in order to replace the cutlass bearing. Can you share your special tool design with us? Thanks, Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty
