I am back with our non starting Yanmar YSM 12

While bringing our Samurai over to our new home on Galiano Island, I had overheating issues. Finally cleared that up with new impellars for the Volvo two-sided water pump for the hand made fresh water cooling system add on.
OK, all good, untill she wouldn't start again. Went through the bleeding process and had fuel to the injector pump, but not beyond.
Now to the current issue. We took out the injector pump to check the high pressure line, and the pump itself. Well, I've now been told by Ben Gartside at Gartside Marine in Sidney, BC, ( great guy! BTW. very friendly ), that I must be very careful about resetting the governor.
Hmmmm, so I've read and reread my repair manual about the subject. Does anyone know of a video specifically on the YSM12 and resetting the governor, or am I just paranoid with my lack of experience?
Thanks all.

I am going to guess that he meant that ya need to be very careful that the governor lever properly engages the fuel rack on the injector.. The governor should be OK if it was working before ..but if ya miss the engagement, it could get really exciting very quickly..

I had great service from Ben and his crew checking and fixing an overheating problem with the YSM12 on my CAL when I bought her in Sidney ten years ago. Can you not get them to install it for you? Not sure what his rate is now but you can ask.

be careful with impellers for the volvos. they had a run of impellers some time ago where the vanes looked fine but the center brass hub wasn't properly engaging all t he time onto the drive axle. so periodic overheating was happening. check for this by pulling the impeller out of the raw water pump and trying to see if thee are unusual wear marks on the inner mating surface of the brass impeller center hub where it fits onto the axle. the bad impeller design led to a lot of overheat problems very hard to diagnose as it was sporadic. another weird cause of engine overheat is that if you have old double wall hoses, sometimes the inner wall splits (like an aneurysm) and temporarily collapses under pressure which narrowly and partially blocks the channel for raw water or antifreeze cooling flow. that lead to engine overheat and it is also a sporadic problem. rx : replace the hoses because that hose - wall collapse problem is tricky to find.
