I am about to begin replacing my original Raymarine instruments, radar, and GPS, in stages on my Beneteau 361 - 2001 SeaTalk system in stages.

Does anyone know what the cable routing is from the nav station bulkhead to the helm station? Any info would be appreciated. It is not indicated in the Beneteau Owners manual.

So much of the Raymarine backbone cable has to be preordered to length that knowing this in advance is really helpful.

Thanks!

Harry

Good luck...
As an example, my 323 wiring is routed from the nav desk through the sink cabinet base in the head to the starboard lazerette allthe way to the transom then under the cockpit deck and up the center binnacle tube and into the instrument pod.
I pulled a backbone cable through the same route fairly easily, used a seatalk1 to Seatalk ng bridge to connect old instruments to new. I’m still running a hybrid system with Quantum radar and a newer MFD with ST60 wind, tridata, and autopilot instruments in the pod. The old communicates with the new, and the ST60 data shows up on the MFD screen as well.

I really didn’t have to special order any cable to specific length and didn’t cut any of the cable set that came pre-packaged as a bundle with the assorted “T” connections. I heard and read a lot of stories about not being able to connect the old to the new, including having to replace transducers and that the old could in no way talk to the new, but so far everything I have connected is working.

Thanks so much for this information. I am planning to to do exactly what you have done. I found a TS-70 unit in perfect condition and plan to use that to bridge my older SeaTalk (1) wind / depth instruments to SeaTalk ng. I imagine that my routing is similar to yours. I am adding an Axiom+ 12 in to my helm.

I imagine that the routing is strange because the electronics are added at a late stage of boatbuilding.

I will have to cut a new (larger) hole in my wheel pedestal for the Axiom+. The wheel pedestal is totally unmarked on my boat. Have you found out who made it for Beneteau?

Thanks for everything,
Harry

Harry,
You don’t mention the model and year of your Beneteau...
My US Built 323 has a Goiot brand pedestal. (2004) . Yours could be that, or Edson, or?

Sorry, I am new to this forum and I thought that it was on my signature. It's a Beneteau 361 - 2001.

Hi Doug,

Thanks to your tip, I was on the Goiot brand pedestal website. They look too hi-tech and hi-design to be the manufacturer of my pedestal. I will check Edison. Weird that there is no maker's mark on the pedestal. Even inside, I looked. I have to be very careful about moving the instrument cutouts. It would be easier if a replacement panel were possible.

Welcome to the Forum Harry.
You said you are adding a 12" Axiom. They have a 7 and 9 inch model. You can examine your current diagonal size screen and find a nearby or matching sized newer unit.

Thank you John! The weird thing about electronics these days is that the older 2001 monochrome displays with tiny screens are bigger (in mounting hole size) than the modern larger displays are.

If you can’t find one that matches the size of the existing hole quite right there are still options. We replaced a Simrad NSS 8” with a B&G Zeus 3 9”, which has a different footprint because it’s a widescreen. Our yard did the replacement, using a piece of star board to cover the hole first, then installing the Zeus into that.

Very well done, thank you! What it star board made of? I am not familiar with the name.

I will keep you posted with pictures when I have the system up and running. Meanwhile, I am interested in any other comments you may have.

My setup was wired with Simrad SimNet cabling in 2014, so I might not be much help on that part. We have a SimNet hub behind the nav table DC panel. The masthead sensor, speed/depth transducer, and VHF plug into that. Another SimNet cable runs from there to a hub in a storage area behind the aft cabin. That hub connects to a flux gate compass in the same area and up the pedestal. One more hub in the pedestal nav pod for the chart plotter and two instruments there.

Thanks! That helps. I will start removing access panels, crawling and measuring cable runs myself next.

I spent 2 days crawling around confined spaces on the boat. The instrument cable routing is from the nav station to the the port lazarette sole behind the galley. Then in the transom (there is an access crawl space to get to the cables. Then forward just clear of the rudder and autopilot. From there up the steering column (accessible through a wooden panel in the overhead of the Portside cabin). The Steering gear is not Edson (according to them) probably Giot, they think.

Note that Raymarine does offer a flush mount adaptor plate for accommodating new axiom mfd’s to existing cut outs that were used for older models.

Thanks BigEasy. True but not old enough for my Mono display chart plotter, or pathfinder radar.
