Dear Perry,
Are you anywhere near Albany, NY or Western Massachusetts? I
don't know about you but seeing a vega interior up close and taking a
bunch of notes would br worth volumes. Respond to me directly if you
like at debaggisf@...

Hello, Do you have the main bulkhead in place? If you do not this is a
big job. We replaced the complete interior of our Vega but at least we
had the old interior to use as a pattern. Take a look at our web site.

This will help you imagine the interior. I guess I should have saved
the old patterns.

Hi everybody,It is my first post on that group, I'm activly looking for a Vega and I have
seen one today that could do the job for me but I have a question regarding
to volvo 10hp. Those of you who get this motor, do you find it powerfull
enough?
The other question is, that boat has been on land for the past three years
so the motor has not ran since, what would be your advice regarding that?
Should I run away? I'm in french speaking Canada so the winter is pretty
cold here and it can do a lot of damage.

Thank you for your advice and excuse my English!

Bonjour Marie

I had a similar situation. Our Vega's engine was not started for 6
years! I had a mechanic look at it. It turned over well but it did
not start as it had no compression or fuel delivery. He explained the
no compression problem. It is caused by the accumulation of rust onto
the rings as they scrape the rust scale off the cylinder walls. (It
is generally called frozen rings.)

Have a good mechanic look at the engine. I used a highly recomended
mechanic from Lachine Quebec. He said not to spend any money on the
engine. I bought and installed a new Beta engine and have not
regretted it but it does cost $7,000 or so.

The 10 hp motor is powerfull enough.

I would like to write in French as well as you write in English. My
spoken French is good though.

Hi Marie

When I bought my last Vega she had been standing for eight (8) years
without the engine even being turned over. I changed the oil, put a new
battery on and bled the diesel system - she started on the fourth turn
of the engine!! This engine is now in another Vega and still going
strong.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your answer, I've heard that you've rebuilt your vega from
scratch nearly. A great job! I would love to have a conversation with you
about that engine question and may be other one! Would you mind if I would
give you a call?

You can answer on my private email.

Thank you very much!

Hi Marie,
In regard to the Volvo Penta MD-6A, my (Vega Costa Plenti,) built in 1972, still has the original engine. ! have owned it for five years.

For winter lay-up, I run the engine up to operating temperature, remove the suction hose from the sea-cock and pump 100% Glycol through the engine and exhaust system. It takes 4.75 litres.

I then change the lube oil and filter; remove the injectors and pour about 100 ML lube oil down into the cylinders through the injector ports, while turning the engine slowly by hand to distribute the oil over the walls of the cylinders.

I then plug the injector ports with clean rags and immerse the injectors in clean fuel oil for the winter.

If the engine you refer to has been laid up well, it shouldn't have suffered too much damage over that time period.

My Volvo has the Combi gear, and in moderate conditions it will push the boat at 5.5 knots. There is no tachometer, so I bring the engine up to the speed where it begins to smoke, then ease it back a bit. Considering it's excellent economy, I think that the MD 6A is a good match power-wise for the Vega.

Best regards,

Don

Hi Marie. I would be concerned about freeze damage around the keel. Water in
the bilge can move to the keel. Freezing could cause seperation of the
fiberglass in that area. Best bet is to have a marine surveyer inspect it.
