I have an original Hyde Staystream One roller furling system. Question. Is re-building a feasible option on these, or do I just shoot it? Again, I’d appreciate your guidance here.

Check with rigrite. Prices may be high but they probably will have everything you need. I have the original stream stay 1 on my 79 H33 and plan to keep it.

Bullet proof

They say that the old Hyde Staystream One furlers are bullet proof as long as you rebuild/replace the bearings every 8-10 years. I had one on my previous 1980 H30 and it worked great until the lower bearings rusted and froze after about 15 years of use (Duh!). The lower furler drum (there is no headstay inside) unscrewed and separated from the bow stem piece when I tried to furl the sail but the rig stayed up. I got new rebuild kits from RigRite for the lower and upper bearings and for the jib swivel (somewhat expensive). With the mast down it is not a bad job to replace everything as long as you can get the set screws out and you have a large enough C-clip pliers. You can take the jib swivel home and work on it on the bench. Pack them with lots of grease and go sailing. Other than the above problems the furler worked flawlessly and efficiently in all conditions.

Hyde Furler

I rebuilt my Hyde Furler this past winter. Parts are definetly overpriced from Rigrite, but the only game in town. I am having some adjustment problems with my lower drum and hope to have success today when I head to the boat. It appears the inner drum may be cocked on the furler rod ( four allen screws hold this in place ) I will let you know how the adjustment goes. If this works then the furler will be back in good shape. Rigrite.com gives good explded views on the system so you can see exactly the parts you need. The rig must be down to do an overhaul.
