My foller furling, Hood 800 single line, wont work. With the sail rolled up, pull on the sheet, either side, the sail comes out without a problem,and if the wind is up it actually flies out. The problem arises whem I'm done sailing and attempt to roll the sail in.The drum wont turn and I am forced to go to the bow and then turn the sail by hand one or two turns and then the sail can be rolled up by pulling on the roller sheet. I have the drum currently off the boat and it turns freely, not hint of bad bearing. Anyone have an identical problem ?

Hello Patrick, Before looking anywhere else, I would go up the mast and check if the Top Bearing at the extreme top of the extrusion is broken. Actually they call this a bearing but in fact it is only 2, 1/2 round plastic parts that keep the metal stay centered in the aluminium extrusion, no moving part. The part is worth 26$ (Pompanette.com) and is often the source of blocking problems on this unit. I own a 35.5 and had the problem as 2 other 35.5 in my area. This part can be change in 10 minutes with the extrusion/stay assembly in place. The symptoms you describe are exactly what is happening when 1/2 of the top bearing is gone. I would also investigate in the anchor well to make sure that the 2 parts of the drum assembly are not too close together. There should be 1/16" between the 2 parts. This can be adjusted by lowering the bottom portion of the drum using the Allen screw under the furling unit. It sure is worth the trip up the mast. Good luck

I also have a 33.5 and had the identical problem. It turned out that 1/2 of the upper bearing was missing. I also had some problem with the upper swivel not turning freely. I sprayed WD-40 in the swivel as suggested by Pompanette and also checked the drum for free rotation. That was last year. This year everything started fine, but after a couple times out sailing, I am having a difficult time furling and unfurling. I suspect I have halyard rap, possibly because of a failed upper bearing again. We will see how it goes this week end. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I am having the bearings in the drum rebuilt by hood in tampa, when the rigger reinstalls it, I'll have a look at the top bearing on the mast. Gotta love this place!!!!!! Patrick

Also Check the Drum on the Furler
Make sure that the reefing line is being fed by a block or whatever to the middle of the furling drum at an angle of 90 degrees to the line of the forestay. Keep a little back tension on the furling line when pulling on the sheet to bring out the sail. Both initiatives increase the potential for the reefing line to coil neatly on the drum. Check the drum for this when the sail is up.
