leak
I had seen this thread on the torrensen marine diesel site. It may or may not help, but here it is. The links to the thread are at the end.I have a 1984 M-18 with a Hurth transmission. Seems the transmission is leaking transmission fluid. My mechanic tells me that the gasket needs to be replaced and it is a big job. He further tells me the only way to fix it is to pull the engine. The engine only has 870 hrs, but is 20 yrs old. Should I just get the gasket replaced or repower given that the engine is 20 yrs old? Jay, My M-18 developed a leak and was losing a lot of fluid. Mechanic recomended removal and new gasket... a big job. Did a little more investigating and found that the leak was originating from the seal around the shift lever shaft and running under the shaft housing and under the transmission. There was no way to see it from above, just run your fingers under the trans shift lever area and see if it is wet. Simple to repair: remove shift cable, shift lever on trans, remove 4-10mm bolts and the whole assy comes off the side of the trans. Replace $6.00 seal and gasket, put it back together and you're done. Took me about an hour and leak solved. it is much easier than I am making it sound. 1. Steve, you're a genius. Today I went down to the boat and checked below the lever arm. It was wet with a reddish color to it. It was definitely transmission fluid. I will attempt to fix it as you have described. Thanks again, it appears you have solved a problem that my marina could not do. 1. http://forums.torresen.com/eThreads/view/engines/view_post?id=501http://forums.torresen.com/eThreads/view/engines/view_post?id=547
