I have a C 30 with a 21hp diesel and a hurth transmission. The manual says to check the transmission oil level weekly. Does any one do that? My real issue is how high on the dip stick should be oil level be. My dip stick looks like a 3/16" stainless tube maybe 6" long. The only marks on the "stick" are a small a groove running around the stick about 1/2" from the bottom and a very small hole at the top just under the nut. Is the groove near the bottom the high oil mark? the manual is totally unclear about this? I would really appreciate some help Sincerely Michael

Oil Level

Michael, On the Hurth transmission, the groove about 1/2 inch up is the oil fill mark. And no, I don't check the oil level weekly.

Hurth Trans Oil

Michael The notch near the bottom IS the mark. You must leave the dipstick UNSCREWED and simply resting on the top of the housing to make the measurement. Don't screw it back in, and then measure, or you'll have too little fluid in there. No one I know checks it regularly. It doesn't and can't go anywhere. Change the transmission fluid (completely) every year. Do not drain it from the bottom because there is a stainless nut in an aluminum housing. You'll need a Par Jabsco Handy pump or a plastic syringe to pump it all out, then refill from the top. A cruddy time consuming job, but only once a year. Beats spending megabucks for a new transmission. Also, unless you already are abolutely sure and know what kind of fluid is already in there, do NOT simply add new transmission fluid. You can't mix Dexron and ATF. Pick one, either one, but don't mix the two types of fluids.

its the line at the bottom

The fill line is the line at the bottom of the tube. Measure with the dipstick unscrewed per the manual. I check it twice a year. In the winter I fill it up, and then empty and change it in the spring.

tranny oil

Michael; The groove at the bottom is the level marker. Clean fluid can be very hard to see so I wipe the stick clean, put a little masking tape on it and check. The tape makes the level easier to see. A mechanic once worked on mine and he added a little extra fluid, to about a quarter-inch over the groove. It made the tranny smoother, quieter, and easier to shift. It doesn't pump it out and it doesn't leak.
