We have a Hurth HBW-250 gearbox that’s been working fine. Last weekend, it would go into reverse no problem but not forward. After trying a dozen times, it finally went into forward, but things didn’t seem quite normal - the power seemed lacking.
We looked at the drive shaft when back in the slip. With the engine at 2,000 rpm, the shaft to the prop turned about 1.5 revolutions/sec when there wasn’t any thrust. After shifting into forward and reverse several times, forward finally engaged and the shaft spun too fast to visually count the revolutions.
We’ve verified the shift linkage was adjusted properly. There is the correct amount of fluid in the gear box.
Does this sound as if the gear box needs to be overhauled? Could it be the clutch? Thank you.
