How do you prepare for a hurricane? We live on the Gulf Coast so this is really important right now. Storm related links: http://www.aicw.org/hurricane/hurricanecover.htm http://seagrant.gso.uri.edu/factsheets/hurncane.html http://www.sailnet.com/sailing/97/tecfeb97.htm http://www.americanboating.org/boatinsurancefaqanswers.htm http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/SEAGRANT/hbhsm/part_1_plan4boat_owners.html http://www.boats.com/content/default_detail.jsp?contentid=1306 Do: · Expect to loose shore power, be sure batteries are fully charged · Remove "sail area", Bimini, sails, dodger · Remove all loose gear from boat and dock · Use only nylon braided lines, double lines, maximum scope, chafe protection · Visualize water rising and falling and set line heights on dock so that the boat shifts with tides · If you leave the marina, have a plan and all gear aboard for securing boat · Be careful when the dock is underwater, wear a lifejacket & don't touch power lines · Ask for help, boat owners generally enjoy helping each other in times of need · Relax Do NOT: · Wait until the last minute, if you have to move the boat - do it now · Dead end both ends of a line, better to leave both ends adjustable · Use short lines, the more scope the better · Use garden hose for chafe protection or polypropylene lines Thanks Murray!

good advise

All good advise, just moved my Oday 25 as we thought that `Lili' was headed this way, learnt all the lessons the hard way last year!!Took 5 months to repair. I removed the Bimini but left the sail on the boom, it was covered and had extra ties on it but Hurricane Michelle still ripped it to shreds. The Lines remained secure but the dock broke away!! So if I can offer further advise make sure you also have a line around to whatever the dock is attached.

my insurance requires removal of...

sails, bimini, dodger, sail cover, and all portable electronics in the event of a hurricane. Their reasoning is that we have so much advance hurricane notice that there is plenty of time to remove and protect these items. Not a big deal as it saves me over $250.00/yr in premiums vs the competition. They only require this for hurricanes and will cover these items in the event of a hurricane if I am out of town and can prove it with travel related receits. BTW, great advice, Mark.
