Ladylove lies peacefully at Matthews Point just off the Neuse River. My insurance agent and I are wondering what the storm history is in that area. I recall one very bad storm surge in Oriental one year. How accurate are the forecasts? How do you cope?

We are on the Pamlico.

Our experience should translate pretty well to Matthews Point on the Neuse. We've been through several hurricanes over the last several years. Forecasting is pretty good for the most part. Most, if not all, marinas require you to remove your boat during named storms. There are numerous hurricane holes with good anchorage in the region, but most with easy access to marinas fill up fast. There is limited haulout capability in the region, but most yards offer to let you reserve a guaranteed spot for a substantial non-refundable fee. Storm surge has not been a major issue in NC this far north, but but I recall that some damage occurred to boats on shore down in the Wilmington area in the past.

accuracy and climatology

Hurricane forecasts in this country are typically accurate, especially when the system is less than 48 hours from landfall. For climatology, go to http://maps.csc.noaa.gov/hurricanes/index.jsp or http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastall.shtml Rich

I have gone though 3 in this area

I have had my boat go through three in this area. One on the Pamlico River at anchor, one of the Pasquotank river at anchor and one in the Dismal swamp canal. This was with a 33 foot Cheoy Lee Clipper. Leaving your boat at Anchor with three good anchors, fire hose chaffing gear and stripped down worked great. Tieing up in a sheltered canal also works if you want to stay aboard and tend lines. Staying at your slip is not an option in almost all locations.
