sailing new purchase (cat 30) from huntington to shelter island (planning to leave 4/15). realize no marinas along the way on the north shore. any suggestions of possible anchorages? (and any other advise welcome).
Port Jeff and dinghy into town,Mt Sinai no marina not much,Manituck inlet, walk to stores.
When in Shelter Island must go to Town Greenport and also Sag Harbor a must.

.........Matittuck Inlet should suite your needs. Or you can sail over to Conn. There are marinas and ancorages all along the Conn. coast. Then sail back over to the Island when you are out east.
I would love to make the trip but I won't be up to LI until some time in July.
I just had surgery and can't do any sailing for a few weeks but hope to be back on my boat in May.

I did the reverse of your delivery trip about 7 years ago coming from 3 Mile Harbor to the western Sound. We spent the night tied up at the Mattituck town dock all the way at the end of the harbor. There was no charge for doing so and we walked into town for dinner that night. It is a cute old town and it is about the half way point.
Be sure to try to time the currents with your trip. Get the Eldridge Tide & Pilot manual or similar if you don't already have one. The current charts of the LI Sound are indispensable.
Let us know if you still need crew as the date nears.
