Hunter38 tachometer/hour meter problem

This is my first post & I hope I'm doing it correctly. I own a 2006 Hunter 38 with an hour meter on the tachometer that is not reading. Anyone have any experience with this? The tachometer works ok but nothing registers on the hour meter. I took the panel off and saw that the tach is not a yanmar but a Siemens VDO tack that was evidently made for yanmar. Any help would be appreciated.

There was another post recently about the HM display on a tachometer going haywire. I think it was sort of agreed by a few of us that the best thing to do was to purchase and install an external HM. There was some talk about the problem being the propensity of a band pin connector to fail but to replace required opening up the tach housing and some delicate work in detaching the tach face. We did not think that breaking the tach's factory weather seal was appropriate as the cost of a new tack down the line would overshadow that of an external hour meter. You may check the archives for that posting.

What Benny said. I've posted in those threads and the consensus seems to be to install an external meter. I'm looking at doing just that. Look in prior threads.

Our tach had the same issue when we bought our '08 h36 last summer, and dealer said it is a common problem. There was no ships log with engine hours, so I spent about $100 to have the tach repaired by the VDO authorized repair shop in North Carolina in order to know the true engine hours and have a better gage on engine wear. The tach's microprocessor keeps the hours in nonvolatile memory even though the displays crap out regularly. If all you want to know is hours, the repair depot can hook up the tach and read it out for you, probably for a small fee. I'll switch to the external hour meter when it fails again. You can get a really nice and reliable hour meter for << $100!

Here is the info you need from VDO Continental tech support.
You can send the gauge to one of our repair facilities in North Carolina. Their info is Nichols Speedometer 336-273-2881.

That is the beauty of this Forum we make a number of recommendations and the persons asking choose the ones they like the best. I agree the HM is an important tool to keep a maintenance schedule and to calculate fuel usage.

Hi, first time going thru some of the posts and detected this thread great, I have the same issue on my Hunter 38, 2005
thanks for the info, especially the fact that it seems the hour meter stores data non volatile since my display is blank, I will try to retrieve the engine hours and see if I can repair the display.

I want to thank everyone who posted to this thread. I sent the tack off to North Carolina & had it back & reinstalled in a few days. Amazing service, a real pleasure for a total cost of $100. It recaptured the hours back to day one which was important to me. Again, thanks to you all. This forum is the best
