Hi ,
We own a Hunter356 2002. Our freezer and refridgerator (two seperate spaces/compartments) have not been working well. We need to keep both dials on the coldest settings..The freezer keeps ice frozen, however any frozen food etc I put in there defrosts..The fridge has to be at coldest setting to keep temp at safe temp so food wont spoil...We have had freon put in and that does not help at all. Any suggestions? Our thoughts are we probably have to replace the units..(cold plates etc)..Just not exactly sure where we would find replacement...Thank you for any help and ideas you can offer...( I have attached pictures in hopes that helps..They are all labeled boat freezer, however they are pics of freezer and fridge..Freezer on left, fridge on right)...
Best,
Lauri

I had a 2002 H356 with the refrigeration system. I don't remember why but I had to replace a part. I think the name of the company is on the unit - likely the side most inaccessible. I'm sure you've cleaned the air filter if you replaced the freon. I had to defrost mine regularly in the heat and humidity. I noticed ours would not perform well if the battery voltage was down. Does it cycle frequently? When my battery was down it would cycle a lot. It's been a hot summer , do you have the problem when the boat is opened up such as on a mooring or anchor?

We have a mooring in PJ and whether we are on the dock shore power at our slip in Stratford CT or mooring, we have to keep both on coldest setting. So in turn, at the end of each weekend we have to empty both sides to defrost, as freezer becomes full of frost (Even though it does not keep anything frozen, except ice). This weekend we had problems..Our batteries (Just in our 3rd season.. AGM's, 4 of them, died)..so we had to jump start boat..(We had been on our mooring for weekend)..So today we replaced all four...Up until then, we have had no problems with batteries..This is our 3rd season with the boat..The fridge and freezer have never worked properly...We would just like to fix or replace, so we can resolve the issue..

Dometic picked up the Adler Barbour line. It is similar though I'm not sure it's quite as hefty. I replaced mine with a similar unit as mine wouldn't work on battery. But the old unit cranked some solid hard cold. The new one is OK, but I wish I'd gone a model up.

Thank you for your responses..Really appreciated..Adlers catalog mentions a booster for the unit..Not exactly sure what that is. We just started boating 3 years ago..Little late in the game, but have to start somewhere..So we bought this boat (first boat we have owned and never sailed before) and have had an incredible time..We go away every weekend and sail on the week days..Wondering what we did before we had it!!! We still have a lot to learn on the workings of the boat and appreciate all of the input.

Just a small suggestion, plug up the drain hole as cold air will escape into the bilge. In any RV place you can purchase a small battery powered fan to create air circulation inside the box.

Thank you. Yes we have a drain plug and only take it out when defrosting units. Will look into fan. Thank you again for suggestions everyone..Really helpful and appreciated.

You have to be careful to not put stuff that blocks the transfer hole at the back top right of the freezer as that is where the air moves through to refrigerate. Also, make sure your doors are tight . There are two nuts that keep the latch adjusted. Loosen one, tighten the other and then back the loose nut onto the tight one. Check your gaskets. I also recommend you get a wireless thermometer to monitor both sides. See the one we use in the photo from Acurite. It has two sensors, one fir each side.

It has been said in some ref the insulation was not done properly and so maybe with
this very hot summer it having trouble keeping cool.
As Jerry said try checking the gasket and try putting some padding on top of the doors
to help keep the cool air in.
Also they make a battery fan(D batteries ) used in RV's that you put in the ref to help push cold air down and I use one in my RV.
I have friends with other boats who keep some padding on the top door to hold in cold air,but on the counter top could be a pain.
