Hunter Vision 32 location for A/C

I'm adding A/C to my 1989 Vision 32. I would like to locate it in the wasted space next to the mast but doesnt seem feasible. It appears the best place will be in the Aft cabin, standing locker, then run ducts behind the stove, sink, drawers and into the main cabin. I will not be able to run a duct to the Head as far as I can tell. Is it necessary to run a duct to the V berth or will cold air migrate there? If Vision owners could share where their a/c are located and anybody else with thoughts/perls, that would be great!!

My '89 V32 has a 16,000 BTU reverse cycle A/C mounted port side of the mast, with the control panel mounted starboard of the mast. The supply duct is routed under the V-berth to constructed wood register boxes on the forward bulkhead, with the registers facing into the main saloon. The return is under the U-Shaped seatee, facing aft. Since we sleep in the aft berth, I routed a 3" flex duct behind the galley, through the hanging locker, to a small register mounted on the aft side of the locker. The aft berth really needs a little more air volume. You may want to consider placing it on the opposite end of the boat from your normal sleeping berth, due to the noise and vibration.

Thx to both of you. Snows, could you please show a picture or two of your setup? What brand a/c do you have? I am considering the Flagship unit that is 16k btu, and placing as Ron did. Ron, how do you draw your return air? Does your aft compartment cool sufficiently? It gets HOT in corpus christy and i suffer from poor air movement in aft compartment as do you. Thx to u both for your help. I am not an a/c guy but trying to do most myself.

My return air is drawn in at the main unit ... there is a grill on the face of the settee ... I actually haven't used the AC but maybe a half dozen times, but I had no problem cooling the aft cabin. If I recall correctly, it is 4" insulated flexible ducting that runs to the grill mounted on the aft wall of the hanging locker.

Ron, what brand is your a/c? Do you actually have a duct that routes return air thru the settee seat into the compartment where the ac unit is? I think I would have to relocate my hot water heater to do that. The heater is square and sits right in front of the mast under the settee.

Mermaid M-16CHP-L 16,500 BTU

My AC is where your hot water heater is, under the settee aft of the mast. My Water Heater is under the V-berth, starboard side. Therefore I don't need a duct for return air to the AC.

I would venture a guess that my water heater was relocated to its present position --- it is now on a wood mounting platform that doesn't necessarily look like original equipment.

Hunter Vision 32 AC

Two years ago I installed a webasto 16000 btu under the chart table I installed a shelf about 6 " off the floor and in it went . The control panel in mounted above the unit under the chart table I Put two outlet vents at the base of the of starboard setee which required a Y in the 5" tube coming from the unit

I am in Nothern Florida and it keeps the boat cool In the winter we have had 28degree nights and the heating side keepthe whole boat toasty

Ed, did you not route a vent to the aft compartment? does it cool down in the aft compartment without a vent? thanks.

Vision 32 air conditioning

Sorry for the late reply have not been in the sight lately My unit is under the chart table .From there I ran the 5" line to under the setee and then put a Y in to teo vents on the fron side of the same setee All y two vents are in the main cabin mid way on the front of the starbaord setee I installed 4 way screen vents and direct the air flow form one vent in the direction to the aft copartment Tha aft compatmrnt is normally just a few degrees higher than the main cabin If you run a hose lets say of 3" as others have described you will not get any more air flow than I do

I purchased my vision 32 two years ago with a 12,000 BTU reverse cycle HP already installed. I live in Va and sail the chesapeake bay. The size of the unit is good for our climate and region and I have no complaints. I work in the HVAC business and consider the installation good. Mine unit is located aft of the Mast under the middle seattee with one supply vent coming out of the bottom galley drawer (after the drawer was removed) and another supply vent out of the starboard seatee. There is one 3 inch supply vent in the aft cabin.

I would suggest the 16K unit in the climate you are in and a 4 inch insulated supply in your aft cabin. The location of the unit is suggested to be under the middle settee like mine and not in the aft cabin due to noise. In the chesapeake, there are a lot of jellyfish in about July that want to clog the intake to eventually stop up the strainer. Make sure you install a good size and easily accessable strainer because of this if jellyfish are a problem. Good Luck!
