i have a catalina 30 with an end boom traveler located in the cockpit. i was at the boston boat show recently and noticed the hunters have the traveler arch with i thought was a better idea than a mid boom traveler. just wondering any positives/negatives with the design. i was thinking of having one custom made.

Agree

Nick and I both were/are Hunter 290 owners. The traveler on top of the arch is a great way to trim the sail and keep everything out of the cockpit. The only drawback is how high the boom sits; you'll notice the upward angle on Nick's; the 290 is even steeper. Paul

Arch

I have the Hunter 356. Arch is a great asset to have, no lines in the cockpit Suggest you sell the Catalina and buy a Hunter

Arch negatives.

Being a Hunter owner(without an arch) I'll probably regret writing about negatives. Truth is that you need the arch to be high enough for standing room in the cockpit. Then there has to be some space for the hardware between the boom and traveler. So if you leave the gooseneck at the mast where it is presently located you will have the aft end of the boom much higher than the forward end(as seen in Nick's picture). Now you have a really misshaped sail unless you do a recut or move the boom higher at the mast. Even if you move the boom higher the sail probably has to be cut off at the head. Or maybe you already have room at the top. But I suppose if you can go to the expense of an arch then moving the boom and cutting the sail are no big deal. End result is that you have moved the Center of Effort higher on the boat and made it more tender. Sorry, just some random thoughts. Just remember that the Hunters were designed for the arch from the keel up.

I guess we now have arch envy.

Arch works great on a Hunter you want to cruise on. Over 12k it keeps up or ahead of most similar size new boats even with RF main. For a retro fit the clew might need moving up but not the goose neck

H365. Arch is great. We have standard main, not furling main, and neither the boom nor the arch is as high as the other fotos. Still room to stand under, and boom is horizontal. But either way, makes a great place for a traveler and for an easily handled mainsheet. Good for speakers, standing on, holding bimini, cockpit light, spin blocks and hanging laundry, too. Been thinking of building a tree house there, too.

Arch's are also great

for attaching your grandkids to if they get to wild. We really like the arch compared to previous boats, having the mainsheet in the middle of the cockpit was sometimes getting us into trouble. Lines would catch on something, we were tripping over them and having a tug of war releasing the sheet. Also got Joan upset since she liked sitting down across the floor to read. Jim S/V Java

interesting to note, in light of this thread, that the Perry-designed Stephens 53 featured on the cover of this month's SAIL magazine sports a traveler arch.

Had a hunter with and one without

probaly like many on this forum, I've had a hunter (29.5) without the arch and now a 356 with the arch and haved to say we love the arch. the admiral was repeatedly hitting her head on the boom on the old boat (furtunately never during a tack or gybe) and withthe arch not a concern. I haven't tried Jim's idea YET..... I do plan on adding the boom end sheeting (the new 45 has this setup) which would making sheeting out from the helm an option (after spilling air with the traveler of course). If anyone has diagrams, parts lists etc for adding this I would appreciate a copy. Tim

Harken Traveler on mine

I have Harken on my 2007 Hunter but Hunter has used other brands. I hate to blow your bubble but Hunter will not make a arch for your boat. You will need to get a custom built arch for your boat which has been done by many different power and sailboaters and will be costly. Nick

Hunter 33 -
Boom end sheeting

Tim, I attended the new england boat show a few weeks back and asked the hunter dealers about fitting my 33 with the same system as the 45. I think this is a great idea that will make sail shape adjusting much easier. They said that hunter wasn't offering it right now and that it woild be more likely that an independent manufacturer will come up with the parts in the near future. I asked them to keep me posted if they find one they like and i will be happy to post that info here. jack

ARCH in FRANCE

One of the advantages of the HUNTER vs French boats is the ARCH. This arch cost a fortune on other boats and Hunter is offering the arch on all their boats. On the new 36 the desgin has been improved and you feel more secure with the arch. I'm tall and the arch's height is important. I also use it to hold my Rutland wind generator. You can also use it as a bracket for external loudspeakers. I don't see any negative point with this arch. Regards
