The litle hood covers used on the Hunter tank vents are the favorite place for bugs to live. The vent bug filter is a round screen placed inside the hood. It keeps the bugs out of the vent line, but lets them build a nest inside the hood cover. Years ago I started taking some scrap aluminium window screen and cutting a rectangular box that I put into the hood cover. This screen keeps the bugs out of the hood area. A side note, the screen in the holding tank vent must be replaced every year. The fumes eat it up.

Seems to me it would be a LOT easier to...

just blast any insect nest out the clamshell ("little hood") each time you wash the boat (and MAYBE once a year, have to scrape out a dirt dauber nest)? That box prob'ly does as much to increase odor by restricting air exchange through the vent as to does to keep bugs out. As for the screen, why replace it? It just makes it harder to flush out the vent line AND reduces air flow as it gradually becomes clogged up by corrosion. The odds of a bug big enough to block the vent line getting into it are only slightest lower than winning the lottery.
