Hi Guys,
I have a Legend 336 with single line reefing. I have reinstaled the 1st and 3rd reef which had been derigged. When putting in the first reef I found quite a bit of friction in the lines. Once the 1st reed was in the main was quite baggy at the luff for about 1 third . Also the mast ring had pulled out of the mast. Has anyone had a similar problem and has anyone tried using the reefing system without using the mast rings. Do they make a big difference.

Single line reefing

The mast rings are the 2 rings fitted to the mast to keep the reefing lines close to the mast

One of the mast rings on my 336 gave way which I am assured was down to poor reefing practice putting too much strain on the ring. I am unable to replace the ring at the moment as I want to tap the mast holes and screw the new ring in place.
I have used the reef on a couple of occasions without the ring and it appears to work okay.
I am unsure how the sail can be reefed tightly without straining the rings with the current set-up but will look at it again when I have replaced the ring.
Do you have the reefing diagrams?
I can scan them in if you would like.

Thanks for that . Neil according to the riggers the ring is needed to stop the luff from slipping back and putting pressure on the cars.If that's the case there will always be strain on the rings which even when screwed in will suffer. Am out this weekend in light air so will have a play and report back.

The ring also prevents tearing the sail as it prevents the block going down past the boom, if not carefull when doing it without the ring...

I've cranked down super tight on my reefing lines and have never felt I was in danger of breaking the mast mounted bails. The secret in my opinion is to make sure you release the mainsheet and vang when you reef so that the boom can raise properly, otherwise your clew won't pull tight, which could cause you to keep pulling the reefing lines even tighter, eventually breaking something.
