companionway cover

Harold: This website sells a companionway cover that does a great job of keeping the cabin clean & dry. As well, it seems to provide some UV protection to the boards in the hatch, wood around the head, etc. Otherwise, I would suggest you should purchase a good wax for the deck and cockpit. It is extremely difficult to keep a tarp wrapped around the entire boat. As well, maybe I'm too paranoid, but the covers seem to be a motorboat accessory. Save it for the MacGregor crowd! Good luck with your new boat. By the way, this site should provide you with a wealth of information on the H26. Rick Engel

Second that

I've been moaning about a cover of some sort since I got my boat. I've posted this question several times, and have gotten nowhere. Apparently you could have one custom made from your local canvas shop, for big bucks, but it's a royal pain to use. I covered mine in it's slip with a bunch of cheap tarps from Home Depot last winter, but decided to forego that this year.

Try Fairclough Sailmakers

We have a Legend 37.5 that winters in Mackinaw City, MI. We have decided to have a winter cover made for next winter. We are looking at a cover that fits over metal tubing and covers the entire boat, including most of the hull. I found Fairclough on the web. Based on their web site, they looked pretty impressive. I also talked to a sailmaker in northern Michigan about a cover. She said she sends all of her work to Fairclough. She had very good things to say about the quality of their work. Fairclough has an extensive pattern library for many boats. The sailmake we talked to does all of her ordering by phone - no measurements. She said she has had no problems what-so-ever with the fit of the cover. Fairclough makes both full covers that fit around metal tubes and something they call a boom tent. Based on the pictures in the web site, the boom tent seems to cover the entire deck. I do not know how difficult the boom tent is to install, but this may be wht you are looking for. The draw back is these covers are not inexpensive. For example a boom tent for our 37 footer is around $1700 before the "off season" discount. Their address is www.fairclough.com.

Good way to use the boat less.

Harold: This is a good way to use the boat less. These covers are heavy and cumbersome to deal with. They are fine if you only need to Remove & Replace twice a year. These things take up a lot of space when you need to store them so keep that in mind too. I suggest that you get a cover made for the companionway and then contact Island Girl for some of their superwax to protect the gelcoat. This will protect the gelcoat 24 x 7.

Custom made cover

We had the above made. We put it on when the mast is down. It runs from the bow to the stern and has a draw rope through a hem that fits neat and tight right under the rub rail. The guy that custom made it did a wonderfull job. Neat as a pin but most importantly we can remove the cover in about 5 minutes and takes about 10 minutes to put on. The cover provides complete protection for the entire yacht from the rub rail up. The mast provides the right support so rain runs off. A stitched hole at the front goes over the mast where it sits forward of the pulpit and the tension is applied at the rear by hooking on the main halyard and pulling tight. We went for white to reflect the heat. Today it has been raining however the yacht has all windows including companion way open for ventalation. No chance of rain getting in or sun damaging the glass. For the little time it takes to put on and off we feel it is a good investment. $945.00aus. By the way the vinyl has a fifteen year warranty.
