I've seen this guy out four or five times this summer, just motoring around the bay and the lake without a mast. I think it's a late 80's Hunter 45, always liked the looks of them. At least he's getting out on the water. Probably 90% of the boats in my marina haven't left the dock this summer.

It is an option, it just depends if it is for you. I always though a sailboat with no mast would make a perfect canal boat in Europe. We once lost our mast on a trip to the Chesapeake Bay and we must have looked similar to that; the slowest power boat around. We did finish 5 days of our trip just slow motoring around. It does feel freaky and there is no sun protection. I do not want to bore you with the details of also loosing our prop on day 4.

This has to be part of a growing trend. We've got the same thing here in Howe Sound. Nice looking, well cared for, 40 ft. + sailboat (make unknown) but no mast.

I wonder if it's got anything to do with the fact we don't get a puff of wind here from June to September.

I find we have no wind or too much wind, or the perfect wind but from direction where you need to go.

I happened to be in Paris a couple of years ago. When crossing over the Seine River on one of the many bridges, I saw a sailboat without mast traveling up river against the current. When I inquired I found out it is quite common for sailboats to have their mast removed before cruising up the rivers on holiday or what ever. They pay a small fee to have the mast removed and stored until they return. It makes perfect sense on a river....of course, maybe his mast is in the yard getting repaired/painted or something and he can't stand not being out on the water.
