OK group, put on your thinking caps.... I'm looking to buy a 1979 Hunter 33' in seemingly great condition. Is there anything I should look for that are known problems on this specific boat? For example, when I bought my C27 8 years ago there were known problems with the spreader brackets and lower shroud u-bolts, both had factory upgrade kits available to correct problems. Is there anything I should know about the Hunter 33?? The teak and holly flooring is curling up at the edges right in front of the sink, what might cause this and is this something easily repaired? The mainsheet traveler has no controls, just end cars that are movable with pin-stops, is this normal? (I'm used to a 3-1 purchase for end boom sheeting on my Catalina) I'm sure I'll have more questions... (and for grins, the current owner of the Hunter we are looking at has made an offer on our Catalina 27, looking to downsize and simplify I guess) Rich Byrnes 1977 Catalina 27 "SunByrnes" #3301 St Clair Shores, MI

Repairing Teak & Holly Sole

Rich, We have a 79 H30 that had a similar problem with the sole material. The cause of our problem was a charcoal cabin heater that vented through the cabin roof. The pipes were rusted thru so we had a leak. Water is probably to cause of your delamination as the sole material is only 1/4 in plywood. We ripped out the sole as damage was so great there was no repair + overall appearance was pretty bad. If you only want to "patch" your damaged area you might want to just cut out the bad stuff & replace with some type on non-skid product. I've noticed that some boats now have non-skid flooring in the galley areas. We are going to put Treadmaster in the tiny area that makes up our galley and underneath the Nav station. When we put the new sole material down I am going to edge the plywood with strips of teak to conceal the edge of the plywood. We also plan to seal all sides with 3 coats of epoxy. Previously the edges of the sole had a metal strip overlay that was ugly. Also, there are quite a few articles in the archives about finishing/refinishing the sole. Good luck

Hardware upgrades

Hi, I have an 81' H30 and I am planning on upgrading my traveler and mainsheet. I find my current (original) setup to be more cost oriented than performance oriented, so I am going to change it to suit my likeing. Your 33 may be in a similar situation. Garhauer Marine is the factory supplier for Catalina and they make some very nice and affordable pieces. HTH

Check Reviews for h33, h37c, h30, h27, h27

These are the Cherubini Hunters - all the same family, hardware suppliers, and building techniques. The biggest problem will be water penetration of the cabin roof and deck, and of the compression post. But get a survey included in your contract, and find a really good surveyor. Most of our classic plastic boats are good to great, but a lot of things can happen in 20 to 30 years. David Lady Lillie
