Has anyone any experience making a repair to the transom to deck joint in a Hunter legend? I had my davits damaged by an unmanned boat and I believe the impact weakened the joint which I assume was a glued joint.

I believe Hunters of that vintage used a shoe-box type glued and screwed joint. If you can describe how it was damaged and what damage you think occurred, others here might be able to offer some advice.

Not a Hunter boat, but in 2016 the damage to my Cal involved a broken transom deck joint. The procedure to addressing the problem, was to:
  1. Remove all the hardware from the deck.
  2. Remove the screws holding the deck joint in place.
  3. We were fortunate that removing the screws released the tension on the deck and it slid 1/2" back into place.
  4. We separated the joint using wedges, which permitted injection of 3M 5200 into the joint.
  5. We then fastened the deck joint screws to compress the 5200
  6. Once the joint was cured, I had the fiberglass worker add 2 layers of fiber glass tabbing on the inside to reinforce the joint.
  7. Then the transom was faired and painted on my boat. The hardware was reinstalled and we are back sailing.
3 months in the yard over the winter months here int eh PacificNW.

The Hunter boats of that vintage use the "outboard flange" design below, but at the transom I believe it's more of 'shoebox' joint since the toerail does not cross the transom. It's a substantial (3"?) overlap there.. might be a challenge to repair!

I was able to open about 2 feet of the joint with wedges. Sand and fill with 5200. Pulled wedges before the cure. After cure I added 1/4 bolts at 6" centers. No movement since.
