After searching all over the internet for a solution on how to clean a badly stained headliner, that was stained thoroughly from the front to the back, due to leaking hardware on an old boat that I bought, I finally found a solution. I had purchased several different chemical cleaners, auto upholstery cleaners, etc, and none of them worked. I finally went to a local U-Haul and rented a Thermax CP5 steam cleaner, (even though it doesn't really steam), and as of this writing, they rent for only $20.00 a day plus chemicals. All you will need is the little 4" wide upholstery wand and any good quality carpet cleaner will work, but I found out that the recommended "dose of cleaner" was way more than needed. You can actually cut it in half or to a third of the recommended amount, and it will still clean well in this unit. I did the whole job with about two quarts of cleaner, after cutting the recommended dosage by about a third. It took a while to do it, and some of the stains were really stubborn, but the headliner looks like a new one. This is THE way to go to clean a headliner.
