We were out for a spritely sail on Wednesday. Great speed (7.1 close hauled) but should have reefed earlier to reduce heeling. We were close to home and decided to tough it out. Refuse to put a clinometer on this boat but estimate about a 15 - 20 degree heel on a port tack, when for the 2nd time since taking possession of the boat, the Corion waste bin lid slid out of position and ended on the deck. Resulting damage was minimal both times. I believe the problem lies in that the plastic waste bin bottom moves to leeward thus the top of the bin lifts up on that side and forces the Corion lid top up also. Then the sliding begins. For now we will store the top other than its intended position (maybe in the bin itself). Long term fix is to secure the plastic bin somehow and/or mount a piece of polymer material (Starboard) on the underside of the lid like the sink lid has with the cutting board. Also I will reef earlier. It is such a pain (not) when one has both furling jib and main.

Wow my 07 H-36 waste lid and next compartment lid seem heavy so they don't move, try added lead weight, take the trash container and see what happens and maybe modifie the trash container.

I haven't had this issue yet with my e33 and have definitely heeled at those angles.
A thing I noticed though; the waste bin has to be placed in such a way to have the lid fit fully on top, I've fortunately realized this at port. If the notches don't fit in place on the bin, the top will slide out.
When underway i tend to leave it uncovered and place the lid in the starboard galley shelf, that holds it in any weather I've encountered.

I hadn't thought of hinges, Stu. But will definitely consider that as option. Thanks.
The galley has a similar heavy weight lid that covers the sink. Underneath that lid it has a cutting board (1/2" polyolefin) that keeps the lid from sliding while underway. When the waste bin lid slid off, We had several baskets of water, pop and beer stored in that excessively large empty space around where the bin sits in. When we heeled, I believe the baskets may have shifted to leeward pushing the bottom of the waste bin to leeward and subsequently lifting the lid allowing it to slide free.
I will talk to the local Corion folks to see if hinges are a viable fix. Also will fabricate something to ensure that stuff stored beside the bottom of the waste bin is secured and may attach a poly material board to the underneath of the waste bin lid like the sink has.

We have not used the bin as a waste container but instead it holds our beers and soft drinks etc.

We agree the area underneath is a potential large storage area, but how best to utilise this space?

(additiional thoughts) How about making up a frame/shelf with a hole cut in it to fit the bottom inch or two of the bin to hold it firmly in place, on which you could store your beers etc.

Now that is a great idea. I think the waste bin is far to large for what it is intended for. Many days would have to pass before one would fill or even nearly fill a bin of that size with trash. Not pleasant. I will add this frame/shelf to my list of things to do this winter. Thanks.

Bad fit

I hate to point the finger at the lid fitting properly but does the lid fit properly,my trash lid on my 07 H-36 seems to be pretty heavy and even a few times when my trash bin is fully full or really over full it has never slid off even when heeling.
My trash bin is way over in the corner and real pain just to lift the lid off the opening to put trash in and I most times slide it back on top but use the hole in the lid with my finger to lift it off.
Like I already think maybe check the fit and how thick is the corian and maybe add a lead flat plate to the bottom of the lid with some epoxy to hold it down,I think my lid has a tight fit and heavy which keeps it from sliding off.

Before I looked at fault with the fitting of the bin lid, I would better look at fault with the skipper's storing prowess or lack there of. The mechanical advantage of the lever (ie waste bin) is significant. With the help of ole Mr Archimedes one can see that, ignoring friction, when heeled, the shifting of a couple of baskets containing water, pop and beer tins against the bottom of the bin would impart significant force at the top of the bin and thereby lifting the edge of the lid. Certainly enough to lift the leeward side of the bin top allowing it to slide out of position.

Several things come to mind to correct this issue. One is to secure the baskets so they don't shift when heeling (ie practice good seamanship). The 2nd is to secure the waste bin so it cannot act as a lever. Such as Paximoon's advice "How about making up a frame/shelf with a hole cut in it to fit the bottom inch or two up the bin to hold it firmly in place, on which you could store your beers etc. "). And 3rd is to fasten a piece of 5/8" polyefin material slight smaller than the bin opening, on the bottom of the waste bin lid.

"Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world."

Think about a bungee cord.Connected to bottom of lid....
Hmmm??.....I still can figure out how something from down below in the galley keeps ending up on deck. Have you figured out a way to Sail your boat while up side down?:yeah:

Sorry onecoolair an old habit from the navy where all levels of a boat (ship) where you walk are called decks. I guess on a sailboat they are called floors or cabin soles.

So, to alleviate any further issues with the trash bin lid, this is what I did. Removed the excessively large Hunter installed trash bin (approximately 44 litres) and am now using it in my garage. Replaced that bin with a much smaller bin (14 litres) Glade Roomate Garbage Container (that is mounted to the backside of the storage compartment. This left a huge space for galley storage and a trash bin that has its own flip top lid and uses readily available Glad Roomate Odour Shield bags (4 gal) to contain the odours. I also took the Corion waste bin lid to the local kitchen cabinetry shop and had them attach a 1/2" piece of poly to the backside of the bin lid. Easy enough to do at home but they did it for a very reasonable price. This gave the lid some depth to hopefully keep it from sliding out of the opening when the boat is heeling.
When the lid came off back in June, the resultant damage was a 2” shallow dent in the cabin sole and a ¾” chip out of the bulkhead in the head. Both of these have since been repaired by my Hunter service manager at no cost to me. Great folks.
