I am interested in any advice comments etc. regarding purchassing a Hunter Cherubini 37. What´s good...what´s bad...overall quality...build specs...what specifically should I be aware of when looking at boats...any model years better than others...etc.? We've all been through this process so any comments would be appreciated. Also...I live near Cancun...will be bringing the boat back here and would welcome comments about the sailing characteristics of the boat. One more thing...I'm 6'5...how bad is it going to be? Thanks much John

Good vessel. Holding tanks were aluminum and are a problem if original. Opening ports are a another problem. Another concern is water in the core of cabin sides and decks but that is no suprise on any 25 year old boat

Lots to like, some care required

I really like my 1979 37c, though I can't speak for the headroom in your case... Nice tight layout below, quality work - some thanks to original owner - and excellen t sailing and handling characteristics. I bought it to sail and I think it is great for that. I have never lived aboard more than a week or two, but think it would be adequate for a couple, crowded for any more adults over a long period of time. It's a safe boat, looks good, and if you are reasonably handy you will be able to manage most of the upkeep without going broke. I replaced my ports, which stopped the leak problems, the water tanks still seem fine, and the engine is in excellent shape and few hours. With any 30 year old boat some things need replacing, and it's just a matter of time and yoiur budget what you are willing to live with or want to change. Mine needs a windlas before I cruise long range, and probably an updated stove. Most other items are outine maintenance, or personal preference.. Boat handles well offshore, in big seas and wind. If you are moving the boat south this year you might consider the Baha HaHa rally as a possible way to travel from San Diego south to Cabo. You'll make lots of boat buddies for other legs of the trip. Good luck, and fair winds, Sanders s/v Good News

get a survey

John: Ditto the other comments, but get an anal-retentive surveyor to go over the boat. It's the little things on a boat this age which can be a problem, but most of them can be fixed. Check the decks for soft spots, corrosion on the mast step, bilge, thru-hulls, motor mounts, chainplates, rudder post, cutless bearing, etc, etc, etc. Mine is a 1981 and I lived aboard for almost a year, and plan to repeat the experience. I'm not 6'5, so you may bump your head, and have trouble squeezing into the Q-berth, but hey, it's a boat. She's a probably a great value. Ignore what what the naysayers say about Hunters, especially the old Cherubinis. Mine was able to destroy a Catalina in hurricane Ivan, and an entire marina (docks and all) in Katrina, with only a bent rudder post. it's a tough old boat. You can find out the good, bad and ugly by checking the archives on this site. Fair winds, RS

About the most head room available

I am on the tall side myself. At 6'5" the v-berth will be tight. I added an extension to the foot of the berth after removing the panel that was there. This seemed to help, but it is still tight. Other than that I don't hit my head too often. As said before the holding tank if not already replaced will be on your list. I love the way the boat sails and she can stand up to the weather too. Just bought mine

Bought my 37C 6 month's back, owner was tall,so removed the pocket door to the head, which i've replaced.Plastic port's leaked, rotting ply core,he cut out bad wood, enlarged area and created windows, with 3/8 Plexiglass over, looks good and strong.Other port's were replaced with S.S. port's.Have resd bout the holding tank problem, hate to even think bout hafting too cut it out and replacxe same,so am going to cut round hole in fibreglass to access top of tank and cut hole in top of tank and install a Beckson deck plate, that way i can flush it out when needed and can inspect the interior, will also install a deck plate in the fibreglass seat to keep it sealed. Also opedened up the area below the stove, which was wasted and created astorage, hinged the front for access.

windless installation

am installing a 12 volt anchor windlass,as there has never been one, don't know how the previous owner sailed this boat to mainland Mexico 2 times and Alaska once with 20 Ft. of chain and anchor rode. The anchore locker design is inadaquate for all chain, which i'm installing,as it's to high and a windless would not be able to feed the chain down without problem's,SOOO,i'm installing a fibreglass tube up against the aft side of the locker, this will allow the chain to feed down to the bottom of the hull, will create a bulkhead if you will to contain said chain, this get's the chain down low, where you want it and the chain will feed down with out backing up and clogging the windlass exit hole.Am using a Horizontal model.will hafto cut part of the locker lid,so it can clear the front of the windlass when opening. Will use the locker for anchor rode and a short lenght of chain for a back up.Am going to go with a Aluminum SPADE hook, the designer states it's the design not the weight that sets the hook, like the idea of 22 Lbs. out there instead of 44 Lbs. will use 5/16 H.T.,about 200 Ft.Picked up a LOFRANS thru Lat.38 for $800,with all new components.
