Hunter B&R Rig tuning

So we've stepped our mast and a local sailor helped setup our rig tuning. It was kind of a wing it procedure so we could get out and try our new sails. I've been reading material and the setup of the B&R rig. The outer cap shrouds should be tensioned to 20% of the breaking load. The inner shrouds adjust the upper part of the mast to be straight athwartships. Adjust the inners to make the mast straight, then tension to 20% of the breaking load. I purchased a Loos and Co Tension gauge. Checking it yesterday, we have a slight bend at the top of the mast, and all the rigging is approx. 10%. So, my question is...I'll adjust the inner shrouds to take out the bend on the mast then tension everything up to 20%. Does that sound about right? Fyi, there are no riggers in our area, so we're at our own demise.

Hi Gary
I have wrestled with tuning the B&R rig for the past five years. I have found that at about 10 - 12% the mast is well supported and the leeward shrouds remain under tension in a 15 knot wind. There needs to be some fore - aft bend which ideally matches the cut of the sail’s luff. I find the bigger issue is getting enough tension on the fore stay which maybe more shroud tension would remedy.

Curious if the Hunter 386 manual procedure on tuning the B&R Rig on pages 52-53 (excerpt attached) is useful? I referred to it when checking the standing rigging on my Hunter 386.

I located a Selden Mast rig tuning manual ( that includes the B&R rig) that I'm referencing , but it's 11Mb and too large to upload. I could email it to you or a link if you want a copy.

What are you seeing for rake? Increasing rake just a little may improve the forestay tension without over-tensioning the cap shrouds.

That's hard to say. Are you saying from the deck up to the top of the mast? I don't have a halyard to use to measure unless I pull the sails down. Don't want to do that as we finally got things setup and we're sailing.

Remember on inmast furling, keep pretend to 1 degree or less or the mainsail being furled inside may be difficult to get in or out.
