We have just purchased a Hunter 54, and want to install a new engine. We are trying to decide between a Yanmar 56 hp and a Yanmar 75 hp. They both weigh the same, the cost difference is minimal. Does anyone have experience with how the boat would respond to a higher powered engine? is 56 hp enough? would she cruise at 10 kts with the 75 hp?? Thanks!

Passage 42

Our Passage 42 has a 62 hp in it. With no wind we can do 8 knots. Thats at 2800 rpm and a 3 blade prop. The boat weights 24,000lbs. I am sure that the weight is more as we liveaboard.

Go with the 76hp..

which is what I have in my 460. We can easily motor at 8 1/2 knots. 9 knots with a clean bottom. For the small difference in price, I think it's prudent to have a little extra horsepower when needed.
