Hunter 49 Swim Platform

After imagining for years how much better our Hunter 49 would be with a proper swim platform, we finally took the plunge. It turned out great and was a hit at Catalina this summer. It is a game changer addition to the boat. Everything from picking up mooring lines to boarding from the dock or dinghy is easier now. No need to hold onto the boat with one hand while trying to access the rear storage lockers either. There's plenty of room to do it hands free.

Very pretty. Will give joy to all.

What does it look like from the side, underneath?
How is it structured?
Sailing on a sunny 10knot breeze day sounds wonderful.
How will it fair when a squall kicks up a 6ft breaking wave at your stern?

There are reasons why manufacturers don’t include it as standard build.

Nice job
Did you tackle this yourself, or enlist a pro?

We made a template and sent it to Stainless Steel Products in Barrie, ON | Stainless Outfitters Inc We worked with John to get all of the support angles figured out and to finalize the attachment details. Most of the swim steps they build stand off from the stern about an inch. We wanted ours to attach tight against the stern. That was a little tricky. Filling in the step area that received the original ladder was a challenge as well. The new ladder is housed underneath the swim-step. The starboard insert was a little slippery at times, so we covered it with Sea Deck. If you're interested in this design, John has all of the cad drawings on file.

It was about $4,000 including the Sea Deck. We did the installation.
I know John very well. Great guy
What material did you use for the platform ? Starboard?
What did you do with the rubrail around the stern? Did you add a new rub rail to the platform?

Starboard and stainless. We did not need to alter the rubrail. The platform is inside of the boat's envelope so it does not need its own rubrail. It’s a generous swim step, but compared to the size of the boat, it is actually quite small.
