Hunter 49 Rudder Question

We pulled our boat out of the water today for bottom paint. I noticed that above the rudder there is a disc that is loose. It spins around in a complete circle. It does not seem to be held in place by any screws. It is sandwiched between the top of the rudder and the hull. Is this typical or do I have a problem? I’ve included a video below.

I don't know if you have a problem but on my H49 the disc does not spin.

Do you have your Owners Manual?

I did major rudder repair on my H430.

The disc on my Hunter 40.5 seems to act as a "spacer" and is not attached to the hull or rudder so it will spin but it appears to be a not as loose as yours. My rudder shaft is stainless and your shaft appears to be fiberglass - don't know if that makes a difference. Mine is made of a delron or similar material.

I did major rudder repair on my H430.
My lower bearing has a spacer which is now Glued with E5200.

If you look close, you can see the spacer matching with the lower Bearing.

This from the H49 Owners Manual.

Your issue appears to be the lower rudder bearing.

PS: Aquamet Rudder bar is the best no corrosion metal available.
PSS: you can down load you H49 manual here

Thank you. I looked through my manual and did not see this diagram. I don’t think the loose part on my rudder extends up into the cavity as it looks in the picture. It seems to be a flat disc. I'll take another look today.

I have a different Hunter (1994 40.5). I too pulled my rudder. I had a "disc" that appeared more like a "spacer" than a bearing. It was significantly larger in diameter than the lower rudder bearing. When the rudder was initially dropped, the spacer came with the rudder shaft. I confirmed the lower rudder bearing in place and I did not have any play in the bearing. Not sure of the reason for the spacer, but I put it back when I reinstalled the rudder.

I don’t this this is a good situation.
I believe that the rudder may “bounce” up and down with the gap.
My suggestion is to get a paid consult with Joe Kerr @ SBO forums. He will know about this
