Hello,

I am in the process of finalizing the design of the Victron lithium conversation on my Hunter 50 AC. The goal is to be able to run some of the heaver AC loads off the inverter including items such as the hot water heater and an A/C. For those who have performed a lithium install, did you have to make any changes to the AC wiring to power these appliances from the inverter?

Also, for your bow thruster, did you run that off the new lithium house bank or did you separate the bow thruster to a dedicated battery?

Appreciate the insights, thanks,

Nate

I do not believe what you are thinking of doing is correct, or logical
The airco units and HW tank are huge loads; meant for shore or genset operation, and run from 220v. The inverter is 120v

I suggest you

Hi Art,

Our system is planned at 600+ah of lithium and we would like to heat hot water and reduce cabin temperature occasionally without running the genset if possible.

I hadn't yet dug into the AC & Hot Water heater yet to realize they were 220v. I wonder if they would support the dual voltages as some appliances do?

I'll do some more research, I appreciate the insights.

No, the airco units won’t run on 120. The compressor & motor is 230, and for a reason… it keeps the cable wiring 1/2 the size
Yes, you could pot a 120v element in your tank.
This won’t work for 2 reasons… the wire guage is wrong, and it will take forever to heat the tank
All boat manufacturers , whether the boat is 220v or 120 volt always take tye HW tank off the inverter circuit.
It’s a sure fire way to kill the batteries

I can’t answer specific for the 49/50, but we have 945Ah of 12V LFP and we run the AC and the water heaters off of a Multiplus 12/3000. We don’t have any 220V loads however. I did change the ACs to high efficiency frigomars and swapped the heater elements to 1kW from 1.5kW. What BMS and inverter do you have planned?

I'm contemplating switching from the Magnum to the Multiplus 12/3000 as well and I'm currently evaluating the Victron Lynx or Victron 12/200 BMS. Leaning toward the Victron 12/200 though. What are you using for a BMS?

I have 3 Lithionics with internal BMS. They are FET based but each rated at 250A continuous and 600A for 30s. I think the 12/200 might be undersized for the 3kVA inverter. The Multiplus 12/3000 can surge to 6kW and calls for a 400A fuse at 12V, so the BMS should be designed to handle that. I really do love the Multiplus, and Victron in general.
