I have a 44 AC, and wanted to see what kind of maximum boat speeds other people with 44AC and DS were getting under power, as well as sail. I have 52 HP Yanmar, also maxprop. For sailing I have in mast furling with vertical battens.

will let you know

tomorrow. I just installed a Maxprop VP and have been adjusting it to achieve 3,000 rpm wide open throttle. Hopefully today's adjustment did it. I will give it a run and let you know on Saturday.

44 SPEED

I have a 44-2004 with a maxi-prop, under sail 23 knots wind, boat speed 7.8 knots with 26 degree boat angle, autopilot on. Traveling down KY Lake on one great ride.

44 AC Speed

We have a 2005AC with the 56 HP 4JH4E Yanmar and a fixed 3 blade prop. Our mainsail is the standard in mast main with no battens. We can get about 3200 with the throttle wide open but we typically motor at 2800 RPM and do a 6 to 6.5 knots. Under sail with about a 15 knot wind and on a beam reach we are in the 6.5 to 7.0 range. Thinking about getting a folding prop next year either a Maxi or a Gori.

44AC with a MaxProp and Furlboom

We have a 2005 44AC with a MaxProp, a 56HP engine, and a Furlboom with full batten main. We get ~7.2Kts in flat water at 2500 RPM. On a beam reach in ~ 18Kts true we max out at ~8Kts.

I have a 3-blade flex-o-fold on my 46le, and had one earlier on my 410. Love the prop, and have never had a problem with either one.

Thanks John

I an thinking of adding a Flex O Fold come spring. I have a three blade fixed now and just wondering how and where the improvement, I have plenty of power with the three blade just looking for improvement in and out of when docking. Nick

not much difference in forward

On both boats the flex-o-fold replaced a three-blade fixed prop. On neither boat could I detect a drop in speed at a given RPM. (My cruising speed on both boats has been about 2800 rpm.) In reverse, the flex-o-fold takes a bit longer to stop the boat coming into the dock. This is an adjustment you'll make fairly easily after the first few dockings, but at first it's a bit disconcerting if you tend to pull into a slip hot. Also, the flex-o-fold walks less in reverse, especially at slower speeds such as when pulling out of a slip. I've never had a problem with fouling or with barnacles keeping the prop from opening fully, but then I tend to take my boat out at least three weekends per month year round. I've never experienced prop vibration either, which to me is a huge benefit compared to other props I've had, such as an autoprop. The flex-o-fold is clearly a cruising prop. While there is a tiny bit more drag when sailing than you'd have with a racing prop, it comes to full power when motoring. To me, that's a perfect compromise. The fact that it's a great value when compared to other props is a total bonus. One last thing: I found that I got a significant break buying the prop at a boat show. Let the fellow know that you've been looking at other props.

here it is

After three trials to set the Maxprop to provide 3,100 rpm WOT. My runs provided the following results in flat water with no tide and 4 knots wind, All measurements are SOG per the GPS. My sailing results are pretty much like everyone else. 1,400 RPM= 5.4 knots 1,800 RPM = 6.6 knots 2,200 RPM = 7.3 knots 2,600 RPM = 7.8 knots 2,800 RPM = 7.9 knots 3,000 RPM = 8.1 knots This is on a 2006 H44AC with full fuel tank, 3/4 full starboard water, empty port water. This is a stock boat except the 230 lb. Genset and 90 lb. A/C. One other note. This fall, on my top off, I added Diesel Kleene PS to the tank using the ratio that basically incrased my Cetane 3 points and adds lubricity. It may be my imagination but it appears to run smoother and have more power. I've read that typical marine diesel at the docks has a lowered Cetane level for financial or storage reasons I am not sure. Either way it's running great and with the Cetane boost and Maxprop I am quite happy with the speed.

John F: About your flex-o-fold on your 410....

I have a 2002 H410 that I acquired new with a standard 3 blade fixed prop. It functions very well as a trawler with a mast, which we do a lot here on the Chesapeake, and I can back it in any slip in any conditions. I was wondering what kind of sailing improvement you noticed when you switched your 410 to the 3-blade flex-o-fold? Dreamboat is fin once the wind gets over 10 knots, but under that it's not so good. Thanks for your input. Bruce Mulford s/v Dreamboat

Bruce,

For a couple years we'd been Beer Canning the 410 with her solid prop and we seemed always to come in 5th (in a 25-boat fleet) regardless of course or conditions. I should add that we were living aboard the boat and that we had several hundred feet of chain in the bow, so she wasn't anywhere close to being in racing trim. However, the first week I had the new flex-o-fold (and new bottom paint) I won the Beer Can for the first time. That said, the most noticeable improvement was in light air. The 410 was never very happy in anything under 10 knots true, especially downwind, but it would hold its speed through a tack twice as well in a light breeze with the folding prop.
