I'm considering re-powering my 1996 Hunter 430, which has a Volvo MD22-L. Any suggestions / experiences to share for re-powering?

Thanks in advance!

I'd go with a Yanmar.
I'd bet that the engine bed will work with Yanmar or volvo.
You're probably looking at about 60-70 hp.

There is another option

Call me crazy. I don't get offended all that easily.
I'm assuming you have a functioning genset.
Perhaps you might consider electric conversion.
The boat will run quiet as a ghost under power.
The physical install should be very simple.
A lot more economical.

I think it's worth investigating.
If this is done properly, it will greatly enhance the value of the boat.

Good luck!

I am curious as to why you are re-powering. I also have a Volvo MD11-L and it runs just fine at 2300 hours or so.

I can't help you on the conversion to Yanmar issues.

I'm hoping I don't have to re-power, but if my current re-build is anywhere close to the price of a re-power, it is something I want to consider. My rebuild was caused by water getting into the oil.

Re: There is another option

Actually, I don't have a genset but wish I did. I'd love a quiet motor. I didn't realize there were electrical options for re-power.

Yes, there are electric refits

There are companies who specialize in electric refits.
There is a Nonsuch at my club with electric drive.
But, you will need a genset; something you would benefit from anyway.
Big change, but the result could be amazing.

It depends on what you plan to do with your boat in the future. If you motor out of the marina and back electric motor may be exceptable. If you plan to cruise and keep of the grid electric would be the worst, a gen set could keep your batteries going for long distance running but is inaficiant at this point in time. Burning diesel to make electricity to drive a motor to five a prop, you may as well use what you have. Also your resale will be difficult as you will have lost the majority of buyers who may want to cruise.

I have decided to go with the newest model of Yanmar (common rail), a 4JH57 which is smaller, more powerful, and more fuel efficient. Unfortunately, the motor is currently on a container ship at sea from Japan, and wont arrive for about a month.

It was more cost effective than rebuilding the Volvo. I didn't go electric, since I don't have a genset.

There are several transmission options and gear ratio's available (including Saildrive). I'll be using the 7 degree down angle, with a 2:33 ratio.

I may be in the same situation, I have salt water intrusion in my engine oil. I am getting the exhaust elbow replaced as apparently that is a common problem with these engines. I have 2800 hours on my engine and am considering repower.

The H430 came with the Volvo 50HP and Yanmar 50 HP.

You can call SBO store for the Yanmar Model#

My rebuild was caused by water getting into the oil.
I have had Zero problems with my Volvo Penta MD22L.

The exhaust elbow "Riser" on mine is a great design, with zero carbon build up and very good quench.

Water in the Oil

Very curious what your Re-build answer was to the intrusion, so I can protect mine.

1) Did you maintain your shaft Zincs?
2) Any signs of the Gear driven Water pump leak?
3) Was there any signs of loss of Anti-Freeze ?
4) Have you sailed much in Heavy seas with engine off?
5) Do you have a Dripless Seal on the shaft?
6) Did you make sure your Exhaust was properly Spitting water?
